RSSDrought Conditions in Georgia … Gov Sonny Perdue Prays for Rain
As drought conditions become worse and worse in the State of Georgia, Governor Sonny Perdue has called upon a higher power to ask for assistance. Sunny Perdue has asked President Bush for help; however, the Georgia Governor is now asking lawmaking and ministers to join him and pray to God for rain.
“Christianity has more of a place in the culture here than in some other region,” said Ray Van Neste, a professor of Christian studies at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. “And it’s only natural, in a way, for the public to pray for rain.”
Of course there has been some opposition to the governor’s move to pray for rain from the a secular group called the Atlanta Freethought Society. I guess these people want drought conditions at all cost and would turn down the necessary water if Sonny Perdue, “asked and received”. Why would anyone simply be against asking for help from God … what do you have to fear? Results!
From George Washington, who declared “a day of prayer and thanksgiving,” to Harry Truman, who established a National Day of Prayer, American politicians have not been shy about associating themselves with petitions to the Almighty.

Well its about time,he should have prayed along time ago…..what was he waiting for????

Georgia needs action from their governor not prayer.

oh Vicki…If God wanted it to be dry in Georgia, then prayer is ultimately defying his will. Right? Slick political move is all it is. If it doesn’t rain, he can claim that it is obviously God’s will for Atlanta to become parched and for people to die. If it does rain he can claim credit for doing the praying. I guess this is why prayer makes people feel comfortable – no matter what the outcome, it is always attributable to God.
Doesn’t the forecast call for a 60% chance of rain tomorrow night? What are the odds that Sonny’s people contacted The Weather Channel, located in Atlanta, and asked them if there was any rain in the long term forecast and then scheduled this dog and pony show just prior to it in order to make it appear as “divine intervention”?
Maybe he thinks God is a wish granting genie?
If he wants to pray for rain, go to church not the capital.
How Yoyo could turn prayer into a negative thing is amazing.
Let’s say that it starts raining soon and Georgia starts filling their buckets again. The nonbelievers will say it would have rained anyway, and the believers will credit it to prayer.
How can prayer possibly be a bad thing? There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I heard a pastor commenting on this today on the radio. Of course, he was in full support of the pray for rain initiative, but he also had some excellent words about being good stewards during both times of plenty and times of need. Perhaps God will use this to show Georgia that they need to be more responsible with their natural resources?
There’s no way that suggesting prayer can be a bad thing – no matter how much people may want to twist it.
Prayer is a good thing and I so hope Sonny is also asking for the Lord’s assistance so Sonny can better understand how to plan for population and building growth. It’s badly needed. Sonny could do a lot more…like maybe go after the water hogs as in the man who lives ALONE in a mansion and uses 40k-60k gallons of water a month. Running out of water doesn’t show as dramatic on TV as say a wildfire but it doesn’t lessen what is happening. When the water’s gone from this area it will be catastrophic. Sonny is afraid to say the “M” word – as in moratorium on building. Commercial buildings are 60-75% occupied yet building permits are issued everyday…why??? Easily there’s a 5-6 month surplus of new homes on the market. I haven’t heard – someone tell me please – what has Sonny said what he’s doing to conserve water???

Nothing wrong with prayer. However, pray for the human race to be less greedy and take care of the planet. Pray for tolerance. {Pray for more selflessness and less selfishness. Pray for more caring and concern for fellow man, not just in our own country.
Maybe God is angry with people these days. Maybe he will ignore Sonny Perdue’s plea for rain.
