The 13-year-old was on a four-night cruise to the Bahamas on Disney Wonder when the incident occurred, she said.

Disney cruise lines released the following statement:

“Safety and security of our guests is our highest priority, and we immediately contacted the FBI about the situation.”

UPDATE: The suspect was a 21 year old passenger from New York, Lucas George Wicker. Wicker is behind bars in The Bahamas and is awaiting arraignment on sexual assault charges.

Investigators with the Bahamian police said, on New Year’s Day, while the ship was in international waters, a 21-year-old passenger, Lucas George Wicker, sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.

A spokesperson for the cruise line said the allegations were first reported to security personnel on the ship, who immediately notified the FBI. The spokesperson said the FBI gave them guidance on what do while they were still at sea and, when the ship arrived in Nassau on Tuesday, the Bahamian police took over the investigation.

Investigators said Wickers told the girl he wanted to show her “something” on a lower deck and, when she refused to go with him, he threatened to throw her overboard. Police wouldn’t say where on the ship the alleged sexual assault occurred. (WTFV)

sounds like disney has been listening and learning. or maybe they all ready knew. incidents happen, crimes are committed, perps are charged, justice is served, everybody’s satisfied, the world goes on.

contrast this incident with aruba’s handling of natalee’s case.

This is one of the sickest, most demented things I can remember in quite sometime. Predators turning a floating playground for children into a child’s worst nightmare. Apparently last years Congressional Hearings were not heard by Disney. And YES, I hold Disney as a secondary party to this alleged assault.

It’s time for anyone traveling on a cruise designed for fun and games for children to undergo a background check before boarding any of these theme based children cruises.

Im sure we will hear he’s not a first time offender.

Time has come to make an example out of someone and Wickers looks like a terrific candidate. I’m sure the Death Penalty opponents will say this crime isn’t a Death Penalty case and doesn’t rise to that level. Somehow life in prison seems to good for this monster.

‘Man overboard’ should be the last thing he hears as the ship cruises over the horizon.

another example of how we are not safe anywhere.

    4. Big Lou on January 5th, 2007 3:26 pm

Anyone who still goes on a cruise is CRAZY!

Disney did nothing wrong. How do you do a background check on a 14 year old boy?. He was arrested and is in custody.
Disney acted perfectly. To blame them is pure stupidity.

    6. MOLLY on January 5th, 2007 3:51 pm

I correct my post. The man was 23 years old. Still does not
change my position. You cannot do a background check on
every person. Congrats to Disney for their action.

Molly, let me just point out that many cruise ship companies have indeed tried to cover up such assaults in the past. Their concern is more their ‘squeaky-clean’ image than any sense of justice or decency.

It might be that they’re slowly changing their act … unlike Aruba … but if this child had been an unaccompanied young woman, perhaps not.

Either Disney will face the facts that background checks are required or they will face endless speculation as to what these cruises are all about. The Disney Corporation has provided a self contained pedophiles dream come true.

Sorry some of you dont realize the sick world we all live in, but the fact is – Disney can not operate a self contained floating playground for sexual deviants away from the laws that govern the rest of us without reprecussions.

Another sad fact is that the cruise ship industry has geared away from the Club Med days of the past and tried to become a family friendly environment without ever addressing the the ethical issues that encompass such an endeavor and who it would attract.

Beer Halls attract alcoholics…Slot parlors attract gamblers.. and a ship full of kids will ultimately attract pedophiles…

This is a nightmare waiting to happen and I will feel no sorrow when Disney is sued after repeated attempts to bring this issue to light.

I stand by my earlier comments.

    9. MOLLY on January 5th, 2007 8:48 pm

Where is it written that cruise lines have to do a background check on 2500 passengers?

    10. Richard on January 5th, 2007 8:51 pm

Perhaps the cogent issue is … what type of security did they have? And where were they?

    11. Big Lou on January 5th, 2007 9:16 pm

that’s just it Richard, there is ZERO security on a cruise ship.

    12. Richard on January 6th, 2007 6:52 am

Big Lou, you’re absolutely right. My guess is that this girl was traveling with her parents, that she reported this event to them, and that they raised a ruckus.

As I said above, had she been a young woman on her own, then based on actual past cases, the priority of the crew might well have been to “contain” the incident.

    13. kerry_zaputz on January 7th, 2007 7:44 pm

      Where were this girl’s parents?

    14. Big Lou on January 7th, 2007 8:13 pm

kerry: At the bar getting drunk. I wouldn’t go on a cruise if it was free and you paid me.

    15. 2boysmom on February 12th, 2007 2:41 pm

My family loved our Disney cruise but you have to use common sense-would you let your 12 year old daughter walk around New York City alone? Parents still have to supervise their children. I am not blaming the victim but expecting the cruise ship to be a police state for security is nuts. What happened is horrible but it will still not deter people from the Disney cruise.

    16. MamaG on October 18th, 2011 11:08 pm

Disney has learned nothing. I wish I’d known of the dangers before taking my family on the Wonder where she was stalked and our family harassed by a 23 year old man that was given special access to the Vibe teen area.
We filed numerous complaints with guest services and security and wrote letters. All we’ve gotten back is an offer for 25% off a future cruise. Are they crazy?
