RSSNBC Doesn’t Find Madonna Crucifixion inappropriate During TV Concert … Do you? Religious Double Standard?
It would seem the networks find little inappropriate these days by what in on TV programming. According to The Drudge Report, NBC has given the green light to include “Madonna-on-the-Cross footage in an upcoming November Sweeps concert special”.
NBC suit Kevin Reilly said Madonna considered the crucifixion a highlight of her show. “We viewed it and didn’t see it as being inappropriate,” NBC explained.
NBC, besides being inappropriate, its also offensive. But what does NBC care of mocking Christianity. There is an open season on networks criticizing Christianity. Think NBC would have allowed it if Madonna was using the Koran as a prop or mocking Allah or Muhammad? No double standard here. Come on NBC, why don’t you allow equal time and have Madonna desecrate an Islamic symbol as well? What are you afraid of?
However, NBC thinks its perfectly OK for a crucifix to be used in this manner.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The NBC television network is still making up its mind about whether it will allow pop star Madonna to stage a mock crucifixion on its airwaves as part of her upcoming prime-time concert special.
Her stage act drew storms of protest from the Roman Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church during recent performances in Rome and Moscow, with church leaders condemning the mock crucifixion as blasphemy.

I cannot imagine how someone could be viewed as “mocking Christianity” by signing a song on a cross. I have read that Madonna was raised as a Catholic and is a very spiritual person who has studied the Kabbalah so I doubt she would desecrate a religious symbol. I don’t know what your definition of Christianity is but I cannot believe that “there is an open season on networks criticizing…(it)” Maybe you should wait until you actually see the performance before you make such a harsh judgement.
I think it is mocking Christianity. What has happened to America and its values? Symbols that we once held dear are targets for Hollywood to use as they wish. Christianity is now targeted by the media for mockery otherwise it is outlawed. What would happen if Modanna was hanging from a statue of Mohammad?

SM: This has nothing to do with freedom of expression. It has to do with doing things that will insult or shock people for the exploitaion of marketing herself. The networks do not have to allow her to do this. She has no freedom to do anything when its on a network. Ask Bill Mahr if there is freedom of speech on the networks.
Madonna does these things in the same manner that Howard Stern does. Shock Market at any cost.

I suspect that Madonna will do or use anything to keep her name and fame out there before the public. Let’s keep in mind what Plato said about democracy … its fatal flaw is that everything is inevitably reduced to the lowest common denominator.
That has always been true for much of the so-called entertainment world: things like “Leave It To Beaver” and “My Three Sons” were scarcely intellectual exercises. (I’ve read, though, that shows from that era are now popular with young people, Heaven only knows why.)
Anyway, whatever the demerits of these things, they never involved the mocking of established cultural icons and the overwhelming moral anarchy, if you will, that seems to be so prevalent now. There’s something symbiotic here: the more outrageous the performance, the more the TV talk shows have fodder to denounce it.
I suspect that Madonna cares not at all for anything save her career, and gives not a thought to anything except making a sensation. Not having a TV, I wouldn’t know.
I don’t see any talent at work, just the cynical manipulation of outrage to engender attention. These days, being famous or infamous seems to produce its own rewards. The real horror is that our young people think that THESE are our cultural icons.
Remember that anonymous waitress out West who recognized that little girl, Shasta Groene, when she was in the restaurant with her captor? And remember how she stalled the guy until the police arrived, taking a piece of human trash off the street?
In my eyes, people like her or like Beth Twitty, if put in the scales, would easily be worth more than the whole entertainment world put together … and that specifically includes the talk show hosts and self-important news anchors.

This is the shock tactic that have been used before. Let’s face it sometimes your just too old to be IN so you use tactics to stay in the front. Mocking Christianity is a tatic used before by the Matronly Madonna, it keeps her in the mix. I will not watch. Alot Teenagers think she is a has been trying resurge.
If she is so spiritual, part of that is to respect

I believe in freedom of expression, but that freedom does not carry with it the right to have your expression heard, much less aired on public TV. Is this the best programming NBC can find for that slot? God help us. I would like to see madonna’s artistic bravery expressed as a something like… i dont know… maybe dressing as Mohammad the muslim pig farmer with something just as offensive and detestible to Islam – maybe in the 2nd act she even slaghters a live pig and eats its heart out while wearing a burka. THEN we can see which religion is truly the religion of peace.

It works, it gets people looking at them and talking about them. Some people will do just about anything for attention.
