7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Nepal … Killing More than 1,000 People (Update: More Than 1,900 Killed in Quake)(Update: Death Toll More Than 3,700)(Update: Nepal Death Toll at 5,045 Deaths)

7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal …

A  7.8 magnitude earthquake has stuck Nepal in an area between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara. The government is reporting that nearly 700 people have died from the massive earthquake; however, the numbers are  sadly expected top rise. The earthquake is the worst one in Nepal in 81 years as it toppling a 19th-century tower in the capital Kathmandu and touching off a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest.

Nearly 1,000 are known to have died in a powerful earthquake in Nepal, with many more feared trapped under rubble, officials say.

The 7.8 magnitude quake struck an area between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara, the US Geological Survey said.

Tremors were felt across the region, with further loss of life in India, Bangladesh, Tibet and on Mount Everest.

The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas.

A national police spokesman told the BBC that 970 people had died in the quake, and that more than 1,700 had been injured. At least 539 people were killed in the Kathmandu valley, he added.

Nepali Information Minister Minendra Rijal said there had been “massive damage” at the epicentre, from where little information is emerging.

UPDATE I: At Least 1,457 Dead After Massive Earthquake Strikes Nepal.

A massive earthquake near the capital of Nepal killed at least 1,457 people today as it collapsed temples and triggered an avalanche on Mt. Everest.

The magnitude-7.8 quake hit about 50 miles northwest of Kathmandu just before noon local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The death toll, estimated by the Nepalese Army, was expected to rise, said officials.

Another 1,055 were injured, said the country’s finance minister, Ram Sharan Mahat. It’s the worst earthquake in Nepal in over 80 years, according to the Associated Press.

UPDATE II: Devastating Nepal quake kills over 1,000, some in Everest avalanche.

A powerful earthquake struck Nepal and sent tremors through northern India on Saturday, killing more than 1,000 people, toppling a 19th-century tower in the capital Kathmandu and touching off a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest.

There were reports of devastation in outlying, isolated mountainous areas after the midday quake of magnitude 7.9, Nepal’s worst in 81 years, centered 50 miles (80 km) east of the second city, Pokhara.

As fears grew of a humanitarian disaster in the impoverished Himalayan nation of 28 million, an overwhelmed government appealed for foreign help. India was first to respond by sending in military aircraft with medical equipment and relief teams.

A police official said the death toll in Nepal alone had reached 1,130, more than half of them in the Kathmandu Valley. A further 36 fatalities were reported in northern India, 12 in Chinese Tibet and four in Bangladesh.

UPDATE III: Everest climbers jolted; at least 8 dead at base camp.

A powerful earthquake in Nepal sparked a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest on Saturday, killing at least eight people at the base camp.

The base camp is where journalists, climbers and their families gather and get news to the world about developments at Everest, the world’s highest mountain above sea level.

At least one team of climbers on Everest appears to be safe after a few hours of anguish in which the expedition leader asked for prayers on social media in the wake of the massive earthquake in Nepal.

UPDATE IV: The Guardian – Nepal earthquake: death toll exceeds a thousand – live updates.

  • More than 1,000 people have been reported dead after a huge 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal
  • The country’s deputy prime minister, Bamdev Gautam, has declared a state of emergency and appealed for humanitarian assistance across the region.
  • 18 climbers were found dead on Mount Everest after the tremor triggered an avalanche. Many more are trapped.
  • The total death toll has risen quickly throughout the day, and is now thought to include at least 634 in the Kathmandu Valley and 300 more in the capital.
  • 36 people have also been reported dead India, 12 in China, four in Bangladesh and six in Tibet.
  • The quake caused dozens of buildings in Kathmandu to collapse, including the historic Dharahara Tower.

UPDATE V: More than 1,900 killed by 7.8-magnitude quake in Nepal.

At nightfall, Nepal’s capital became a tent city, as thousands of residents displaced by Saturday’s devastating earthquake stayed in their dark gardens and out on the cracked streets and lanes, afraid to go back inside because of waves of aftershocks, including a powerful jolt Sunday that the U.S. Geological Survey said measured 6.7 magnitude and which sent people fleeing for open ground and safety.

It had been a pleasant Saturday morning, with families just sitting down to lunch and tourists thronging to Kathmandu’s Durbar Square when the temblor hit, a horrible rocking motion that seemed to go on without end. The quake was ultimately felt across South Asia — in Lahore, in New Delhi, in Dhaka. Snow avalanched down Mount Everest. Buildings fell, mud-joined huts collapsed. By the end of the night, more than 1,900 lay dead, Nepalese officials said, with countless more injured.

UPDATE VI: Death toll from a devastating earthquake rose past 3,700.

Rescue workers raced to reach remote rural villages in Nepal Monday as the official death toll from a devastating earthquake rose past 3,700 and threatened to climb.

Nepal police said in a statement Monday that the country’s death toll had risen to 3,617 people. That number does not include the 18 people confirmed dead in an avalanche that swept through the Mount Everest base camp in the wake of the magnitude-7.8 earthquake. Another 61 people were killed in neighboring India. China reported that 20 people had died in Tibet.

Reports received so far by the government and aid groups suggest that many communities perched on mountainsides are devastated or struggling to cope. Udav Prashad Timalsina, the top official for the Gorkha district, near the epicenter of Saturday’s quake, said he was in desperate need of help.

“There are people who are not getting food and shelter. I’ve had reports of villages where 70 percent of the houses have been destroyed,” he said.

Nepal quake: Death toll passes 3,700 amid fears of devastation in rural areas.

The death toll in Nepal from the earthquake that struck two days ago has risen to 3,726, Nepalese police spokesman Kamal Singh Bam said Monday.

As the death toll from Nepal’s worst earthquake in decades surged past 3,400 on Monday, big questions remained about the scale of the devastation in rural areas.

The destruction in Kathmandu, the capital, is stark: Revered temples reduced to rubble, people buried in the wreckage of their homes, hospitals short on medical supplies overflowing with patients. Serious damage is also reported in villages in the surrounding valley.

But farther out across Nepal’s rugged landscape — closer to the epicenter of the 7.8 magnitude quake that struck Saturday — the situation is worryingly murky.

UPDATE VII: The official death toll from Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal has increased.

The official death toll from Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal has increased.

Nepal police late Wednesday reported 5,045 deaths had occurred in Nepal.

It also said more than 10,100 people had been injured and 7,400 of them remained hospitalized.

In addition, 19 people were killed on Mount Everest, 61 people were killed in India and China reported 25 deaths in Tibet.

The University of Florida’s Zeta Beta Tau Frat Under Investigation After Members Spit On Wounded Vets and Pissed on American Flag (Update: UF Suspends ZBT)

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA ZETA BETA TAU FRAT SPIT AT WOUNDED VETS AND URINATED ON AMERICAN FLAG …

The University of Florida’s Zeta Beta Tau frat is under investigation after it was reported that members of their fraternity spit on wounded veterans and their service dogs and urinated on American flags. WTF is wrong with kids these days? The incident occurred at Panama Beach, gee what a shocker, when Zeta Beta Tau students from UF and Emory University were in Panama City Beach for their spring formal and wounded vets and their families were in town as well as part of the Warrior Beach Retreat. Panama City, FL gets another black eye. Is there any semblance of decorum in this town anymore? The University of Florida and Emory University should be embarrassed and ashamed of the actions of there frats. Personally, I believe they should be booted off campus and eliminated. This kind of conduct should never be tolerated. The UF ZBT frat was already on probation prior to this disgusting act. Sorry, they need to be gone, they obviously serve no functional purpose and have such contempt for wounded American heroes that have defended America’s freedom’s, including theirs.

The University of Florida’s chapter of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity is under investigation after members spit on and took flags from wounded veterans.

Last weekend, Zeta Beta Tau students from UF and Emory University were in Panama City Beach for their spring formal. They were staying at the Laketown Wharf Resort where veterans were also staying for the Warrior Beach Retreat, according to Linda Cope, founder of the retreat.

For the past six years, the Warrior Beach Retreat has been hosted by Panama City Beach twice a year to bring in wounded veterans and their families.

Cope honors her son, Joshua, at the retreat — he lost both legs and his right hand after his vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Iraq, according to the retreat site.

Members of the University of Florida chapter of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity are under investigation after spitting on and taking flags from wounded veterans. The students and veterans were in Panama City Beach when the incident occurred.

Cope said Zeta Beta Tau students picked on the veterans, spit on them and their service dogs, and urinated on American flags.

“In all of my years, I’ve never seen such debauchery and disrespect,” Cope said.

Linda Cope then received an email apology from UF President W. Kent Fuchs, Executive Director of the National Zeta Beta Tau Laurence A. Bolotin, but nothing from Emory University.

“I want to make clear that I am deeply sorry for the affront that our students may have caused,” Fuchs wrote in the email. “I want to assure you that it is not representative of our students or our university, and we will make every effort to learn more, take appropriate action and prevent similar incidents from occurring again.”

“The University of Florida is extremely concerned about allegations, specifically of illegal behavior with our students,” Sikes said. “We’re taking this matter vary seriously and opened an investigation to determined what happened and what we need to do in response.”

Executive Director of the National Zeta Beta Tau Laurence A. Bolotin, a University of Florida graduate from 2001, also wrote to Cope, stating Emory, UF and the international headquarters are fully cooperating with investigations and both chapters have placed themselves under suspension.

UPDATE I: The University of Florida has Suspended ZBT.

The University of Florida suspended one of its fraternities on Friday after allegations that its members hurled drunken insults and spat at a group of disabled military veterans at a Panama City Beach resort.

The school said on Friday that it is charging the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity with obscene behavior, public intoxication, theft, causing physical or other harm, and damage to property.

The suspension came after the fraternity had already suspended operations itself and expelled three of its members after finding they had behaved inappropriately.

“I am personally offended and disappointed by the behavior that has been described to me,” Dave Kratzer, the school’s student affairs vice president and retired U.S. Army major general, said in a statement.

UPDATE II: Emory University claims their Frat were angels.

CBS46 News

Emory officials said they are investigating but so far there’s no evidence to implicate their students in the incident. Emory’s Zeta Beta Tau fraternity told CBS 46 in Atlanta they were shocked to learn of what they call “atrocious acts.”

But Cope told the station: “There were too many students from Emory for none of them to be involved. It is hard for me to believe that no Emory student was a part of this. This denial is a slap in the face of veterans.”

About 60 veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan were also attending a retreat that has been held twice a year for the past six years at the resort. Cope started the event in honor of her son Joshua, who lost both legs in Baghdad in 2006 when a roadside bomb exploded under his Humvee.

One letter to Fuchs described students spitting on veterans, throwing beer bottles over a balcony and ripping flags off their cars.

Cope said hotel security got the situation under control and the fraternity members were evicted the next morning. The fraternity sent a letter of apology to Cope.

Mitt Romney Says on Hugh Hewitt Show Regarding Clinton Foundation Uranium Payments … “It Looks Like Bribery”

Mitt Romney says, “It Looks Like Bribery.”

Yesterday on the Hugh Hewitt radio show, Mitt Romney was asked what his reaction was  of the New York Times article report documenting cash flowing from the Russians amid a uranium deal to the Clinton Foundation. Romney, the former 2012 GOP presidential nominee, said that he was stunned and “it looked like bribery”. Romney went on to say that it looks like bribery and a cover up on behalf of Hillary Clinton and had she not wiped out thousands of emails, we might know more.

“You know, I’ve got to tell you, I was stunned by it. I mean, it looks like bribery.”

“I mean, there is every appearance that Hillary Clinton was bribed to grease the sale of, what, 20% of America’s uranium production to Russia, and then it was covered up by lying about a meeting at her home with the principals, and by erasing emails.  And you know, I presume we might know for sure whether there was or was not bribery if she hadn’t wiped out thousands of emails.”

“But this is a very, very serious series of facts, and it looks like bribery.”

It is too bad that Mitt Romney did not go after Barack Obama like he is now Hillary during the 2012 presidential election. Had he done so and kept his foot on Obama’s neck following the 1st Presidential debate instead of coating and playing a prevent defense, he probably would have won.

Catholic Middle School Student Rose McGrath Who Battled Cancer Has Been Dismissed From St. Joseph Middle School Over Attendance & Academic Performance

SHAMEFUL, HOW CAN THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTRY BE SO FRIGGING IGNORANT … MIDDLE SCHOOL DISMISSES CANCER SURVIVOR.

In 2012 Rose McGrath was diagnoses with with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. For 2 1/2 years she has battled the dreaded disease and survived only to have to battle the ignorance of the educational school system in America.  Rose McGrath was dismissed from St. Joseph Middle School, part of the Battle Creek Area Catholic School system, because of attendance and academic performance. UNREAL. How the hell do you dismiss a student when the reason why they have missed school is because of battling cancer, not just skipping school for the sake of doing it? Has the educational system lost its mind in this country? And this isn’t not even public school, it is a Catholic school. Have you no shame. no common sense, no compassion?

12 year old Rose McGrath said, “I didn’t do anything wrong, but they still got rid of me.”

Father John Fleckenstein, with Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools said the following, “These were extraordinary circumstances, but so many accommodations were made we felt eventually it became a point where we really had to help Rose, by being able to make sure that she was getting the assistance that she needed and to learn.” The parents disagree and stated that the school failed their child saying, “The accommodations  which were made were woefully inadequate for a child with such a serious diagnosis.”

VIDEO – CBS News

A young girl who has just finished fighting the biggest fight of her life has been dealt another blow.

In August 2012, Rose McGrath, of Battle Creek, was diagnosed with leukemia.

But last week, her family received a letter in the mail that would turn her world upside down.

The letter addressed concerns regarding Rose’s attendance and academic performance, and stated that Rose had been dismissed from St. Joseph Middle School.

“I didn’t do anything wrong, but they still got rid of me,” Rose said.

Rose McGrath is beside herself.

She’s been with the Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools all her life, but attending school got difficult when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2012.

“Even though she’s now done with her treatment you still have a very long recovery process because you’ve basically just put two and a half years of poison into your body. you’re not recovering overnight,” said Rose’s mother Barbara McGrath.

The McGraths say despite all of the obstacles, Rose was on track to pass her core classes.

Father John Fleckenstein and the St. Joseph Middle School should be ashamed of themselves. You call yourselves Christians? How in the hell do you let one of God’s children fall through the cracks after she had battled something as vile as acute lymphoblastic leukemia. How can the answer be to dismiss a child from school whose only crime was battling cancer. What kind of low life people are you?

The McGrath parents said they have filed a civil rights complaint on behalf of their daughter. Personally, I hope they sue this school and Father John Fleckenstein personally.

WWJD

Let’s take a look at the St Josephs Middle School website and their mission statement.

Let me just say one thing to Father Fleckenstein, the school board and the Battle Creek area Catholic School system … JESUS CHRIST WOULD HAVE A HUGE ISSUE WITH WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AND I HARDLY BELIEVE THAT DISMISSING A CANCER PATIENT IS IN LINE WITH CHRIST’S VALUES.

26 year old Elizabeth Elena Laguna-Salgado has been missing since April 16, 2015 in Provo, Utah. She was last seen walking home Thursday, April 16 from the Nomen Global Language School at 384 W. Center St.; however, failed to report to work last week or return to her Provo apartment. The police have stated that Salgado’s phone has been turned off and there hasn’t been any credit card activity since Thursday.

Laguna-Salgado, 26, was last seen walking home April 16 from the Nomen Global Language School at 384 W. Center St. Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for the woman, who failed to report to work last week or return to her Provo apartment.

Laguna-Salgado is a returned Mormon missionary who has only been living in the area for about a month, Villalobos said. Family members told police they have not been able to make contact with her.

Her only relative in the area is an uncle, as her parents are in Mexico, according to the page.

“No ones knows where she is or even has a clue of where she could be,” a post to the page reads.

Laguna-Salgado is described as 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-5, 120-130 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes.

When last seen, she was wearing a denim jacket, blue jeans, black or brown knee-high boots, and was carrying a denim hand bag with red straps.

Provo police and family members were ramping up efforts Thursday to find a missing woman, and her uncle fears she was taken against her will.

“I believe somebody took her by force,” Rudemberth Salgado said of his 26-year-old niece Elizabeth Elena Laguna Salgado.

Salgado said his niece isn’t the type of person to leave or lose contact with family, and she left important items behind.

“Her passport is in her apartment and all her stuff is in her apartment,” he said.

UPDATE III: Elizabeth Elena Salgado Case: Unknown If Body in Suitcase Is Missing Utah Woman.

On Thursday night, a body that was too badly decomposed to immediately confirm its age or sex was found in a suitcase along Interstate 80 near the Saltair Resort on the shore of the Great Salt Lake.

A state transportation crew found human remains in a suitcase Thursday along a highway near Salt Lake City, Utah, authorities said, stressing that it was too early to know whether the remains were those of Elizabeth Elena Salgado, the Provo woman who’s been the subject of a national missing persons alert since last week.

The state Transportation Department said the crew was installing a cable barrier along Interstate 80 near the Saltair Resort on the shore of the Great Salt Lake when a worker spotted the suitcase about 2:45 p.m. (4:45 p.m. ET). The worker called the state Highway Patrol and discovered the body inside when the trooper arrived.

Police investigating body found in suitcase near Saltair.

Human remains were located in a suitcase along a freeway Thursday, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.

The remains were located by Utah Department of Transportation workers on I-80 near the Saltair resort just before 3 p.m. The large suitcase was reportedly in a ravine off of the shoulder and not visible from the road.

Provo police confirmed Thursday evening that they are working with investigators in the case, but did not know yet whether the body could be missing Provo woman Elizabeth “Elena” Laguna Salgado.

Provo Police Chief John King said his officers are working with investigators to gather more information.

“We don’t know much about the body’s age, gender or anything like that,” said UHP Lt. Jared Garcia. “We need to secure the evidence, process the crime scene, take care of that part of it.”

UPDATE IV: Body Found in Suit case not that of Missing Elizabeth Elena Laguna-Salgado.

Provo police determined the body was not Elizabeth “Elena” Laguna Salgado, who was last seen on April 16. The 26-year-old vanished while walking home from an afternoon class at the Nomen Global Language School in Provo, where she was studying English.

“All last night I couldn’t sleep thinking this was my daughter,” her father, Julio Laguna Ozuna, told Good4Utah. “We prayed and have been fasting, praying to our heavenly father. “I feel relieved and have new found strength to continue looking for my daughter.”

UPDATE V: Body Found in Suitcase in Utah Linked to Missing Vegas Woman, Susana Villalvazo.

There are signs the body found Thursday in a ravine along Interstate 80 is that of Susana Villalvazo, but investigators are awaiting test results before making a final determination, Lt. Justin Hoyal of Utah’s Unified Police Department said Saturday.

His department was contacted by Las Vegas police after the body was described as that of a middle-aged woman who had a mastectomy and a wrist tattoo of a pink breast cancer ribbon, Hoyal said. When the 46-year-old Villalvazo went missing last November, Las Vegas police said she was missing a breast and had a pink-ribbon tattoo on a wrist.

“Obviously, there are close similarities between the two. But we’ll have to wait until we get lab testing results for 100 percent certainty,” Hoyal told The Associated Press. “We’re hoping within the next several weeks to have that finalized.”

The body was so badly decomposed that investigators could need DNA testing or dental records to establish the identity, he added.

Villalvazo and her stepfather, Samuel Teran, 75, were reported missing under suspicious circumstances from their family’s Las Vegas home on Nov. 5. Two days later, Teran shot himself in the head after police stopped his SUV outside a fast-food restaurant in North Las Vegas. He later died in a hospital.

The two were believed to be traveling together in the SUV earlier, and family members said they did not get along.

Villalvazo’s cousin, Juan Villasenor, said he was surprised it took so long to find the body because the suitcase was dropped along a busy interstate.

UPDATE VI: Utah woman still missing 1 month after disappearance.

A month after Elizabeth Elena Laguna-Salgado disappeared while walking from school in downtown Provo to her apartment, her family is getting increasingly desperate to find the young woman.

So far, no trace of the 26-year-old has turned up despite searches by police and scores of volunteers, an offer of a $15,000 reward and pleas for information from Laguna-Salgado’s loved ones and others, including Elizabeth and Ed Smart.

In an email sent Wednesday, the missing woman’s sister, Sara Yazmin Laguna-Salgado, who lives in the family’s hometown of Chiapas, Mexico, said, “Please help us, the situation is killing us, we have so much pain.”
