Following the NYC Grand Jury Decision on Eric Garner, Barack Obama Fans the Flames … “When Anybody in This Country Is Not Being Treated Equally Under the Law, that’s a Problem”

Following today’s grand jury decision in NYC not to indict NYPD officer President Obama weighed in on a grand jury’s decision Wednesday not to indict a New York City Police Department officer in the choke-hold death of an unarmed black man, calling the episode an “American problem, not just a black problem.” Hmm, an American problem, eh?

Earlier Wednesday, a grand jury opted not to bring charges against the officer for his role in the death of Eric Garner, which was captured on video. It represented the second racially-charged case in recent weeks that required the president’s attention, following the lack of an indictment against Ferguson, Mo., police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of teenager Michael Brown.

“We’re seeing too many incidences where people do not have confidence that folks are being treated fairly,” Obama said. “This is an issue we’ve been dealing with for too long, and it’s time for us to make more progress than we’ve made.”

Obama declined to comment directly on the grand jury’s decision, saying only that Attorney General Eric Holder would address the matter more extensively.

The WAPO has an interesting take on the NYC grand jury no indictment of officer Daniel Pantaleo … ‘With Eric Garner, Obama’s body camera argument just took a big hit.’

President Obama announced this week that, in response to Ferguson and other cases of cops killing unarmed black men, the White House would call for $75 million to make 50,000 body cameras available to police departments across the country.

But on Wednesday, a grand jury declined to indict New York police officers in the choking death of Eric Garner — a case in which there was footage. And the timing couldn’t really be worse for the White House.

One activist who attended a White House meeting with Obama on Monday and talked with NBC News suggested that cameras weren’t exactly a cure-all:

I am yet to hear the works- “resisting arrest”. Hell, let them hand-cuff you, it’s not going to hurt.
Does anyone have to obey a police officer anymore? Or does that apply only if you are black? Or only if the officer is white?
What are the rules that the justice dept and the white house go by?
Somebody needs to clue me in.
This is 3 black persons, recently killed by police, that would all be alive if they had only done what they were told to do by police.
      So simple, yet so complicated.

obama needs to say “STOP BREAKING THE LAW”. When you break the law, fight with officers and resist arrest over your crime, you never know what the end result might be. Unfortunately the end result was final. If he would of gone along peacefully this never would of happened and his asthma would not of interfered. Garner was married with children, what kind of a role model was this father.

The root of the problem is breaking the law…blacks think the law doesn’t apply to them. obama’s words were, “You can do anything you want to in this country just don’t get caught”. So in essence he was saying go ahead and break the law. A leadership role approving of crime.

When we have a criminal in the White House and another heading the department of Justice they will support the black lawbreakers on the streets.

Selling cigarets on the street one or two at a time is a misdemeanor and usually results in a fine.

The black lawbreaker had the choice of complying with the officers commands and just getting handcuffed. Instead he chose to resist the officer who had other officers to help in the arrest.

A grossly overweight guy that was over six feet tall is not an easy one to forcefully place in custody. In addition, information was never released regarding the perps health. He could have had a heart condition that when stressed would flare up. The cause of death was never released to the public.

When I first heard about this and saw the video, it was stated that Mr. Garner was known to sell untaxed cigarettes but was not doing so at the time. I don’t know if he was or wasn’t. But I know this. Selling unlicensed cigarettes is not a crime calling for capital punishment, which was meted out to Mr. Garner.

IMO we are fast becoming a police state and the Federal government is arming local police departments with military grade weapons. It also appears that every government agency now has its own militia, the IRS, the BLM, even the Social Security Administration. Going after old folks, I guess.

I do not believe the officer intentionally killed Mr. Garner, but I also believe that the reaction to his misdemeanor, if even that, was ‘way too much, resulting in his death.

Others might be satisfied to allow the government the power it has now taken on itself, but not I. The Grand Jury should have indicted the officer who administered the chokehold, which, by the way, is prohibited for the NYPD to use.

Perhaps Mr. Garner was not in the best of health, but he is dead because of the NYPD, not natural causes.

EXCESSIVE FORCE – RESULTING IN DEATH?

Yes, the Officer should have been indicted.

Since when is selling cigarettes without a permit worthy of the death penalty? This police officer made himself judge / jury / and executioner when he subjected Mr. Garner to lethal force.

SM: Personally I think the law is BS. However, how idiotic the law, if you resist arrest no matter what color you are, you will wind up on the short end of the stick with the police. The fact that this man was in such poor health condition did not help matters.

      Rules to live by:
      1. Don’t do things that are illegal and break the law.
      2. When confronted by police, act respectful.
      3. Do not resist Arrest.
