SI: Ohio State’s Win over Michigan State Proves the Buckeyes Are Here to Stay … Stay Where, In the Big Ten, the Biggest Joke Power 5 Conference Today?
I KNEW THERE WAS A REASON WHY I CANCELED MY SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SUBSCRIPTION YEARS AGO … ENOUGH OF THE BS THAT OHIO ST IS GREAT.
Even is the Buckeyes win out, sorry, they are not one of the top four teams in college football … NOT EVEN CLOSE. If the committee actually even considers them, then the new format is a greater joke than the BCS. Let me first preface this by saying I miss the old days when Ohio St and Michigan used to be relevant and played some of the best games ever. However, we are along way from that and the Buckeyes being in the same sentence as one of the best college football teams in America.
With all due respect the the Ohio St. Buckeyes and no due respect to the blathering at SI, let’s just call OSU and the Big Ten this year and the past couple of years for what it has been, a total and complete joke.Sorry, but one win against an over-ranked team from your own bad conference does not a Final 4 playoff team make. Sports Illustrated, get over yourself, remember when you used to be relevant? Enough of this statement win nonsense, that goes for you too ESPN. Why don’t you put up one of your famous polls to see what America thinks as to if Ohio State is a Final 4 worthy playoff team. hmm? Who have you played, just Michigan State? This some how makes you one of the 4 best teams in the country, really? Prior to the victory over the Spartans, who was you best win against, Maryland? Exactly who on the schedule below even warrants Ohio State to be in the Top 10, let alone any talk of being apart of the NCAA College football Final 4? What team(s) in their out of conference games against Navy, VA Tech, Kent State and Cincinnati screams Final 4 worthy?
Sorry, if a college football team decides to play no one and is a part of a weak, weak conference … NO, THEY SHOULD GET NO CONSIDERATION TO BE CALLED ONE OF THE 4 BEST TEAMS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL.
First there is Navy who has a current 4-5 record, then there is Kent State out of the MAC who is 1-8. Let us not forget the un-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats out of that football power, the American Athletic Conference, at 5-3. Last but not least there is the 4-5 Virginia Tech Hokies, 1-4 in the ACC, who the Buckeyes lost to. You lost to them at home and no whining about the QB situation. Then wins against Maryland, Rutgers, Penn St. and Illinois. Even former Ohio State Buckeye and ESPN’ analyst Chris Carter would say, C’mon man, REALLY?
No Bleacher Report, Ohio State is not playoff worthy. The only thing the Buckeyes are worthy of is winning the Big Ten title, for what that is worth. Forget the euphoria that Ohio State actually won their first game against a top 10 opponent since 2006, which just further exemplifies how down their program has been, but yet inflated by ridiculous past poll ranking by playing nothing but cupcakes. So now Ohio State has beat Michigan St, just curious, who have the Spartans played, the Oregon Ducks? Who they wound up losing to 46-27. It must have been those wins against Jacksonville St, Eastern Michigan and Wyoming that warranted that #8 ranking. I guess everyone ignored that #61 SOS of the Spartans. Oh, and by the way, Ohio St. is #53.
This was supposed to be a statement game for the Big Ten’s best team, and it was. It just turns out that that team is Ohio State, not Michigan State. The Buckeyes grabbed the Spartans’ statement, read it aloud on national television, and now you can get ready for a whole lot of Urban Meyer and Ohio State — not just this season but next, too.
No. 14 Ohio State beat No. 8 Michigan State, 49-37, and afterward the Buckeyes let the media in on a little secret: They knew this would happen. They didn’t “know” in the way that young athletes sometimes assume they will win, no matter who they play. They really knew they would beat Michigan State. They knew how and why.
Because Meyer is such a good coach, and the Big Ten is so weak, the Buckeyes have been able to win while they build. The Big Ten helped them look better than they were the last two years. And if the Buckeyes played in a better league, they probably would have been beaten two or three times already this season.
A better league would have knocked the Buckeyes out of this year’s national-title race before they could grow up. But they play in the Big Ten. They only lost once, to lowly Virginia Tech when Barrett was still finding his footing. And now it’s November, and are there really four teams that are better than this one right now? Are you sure?
YES, I AM 100% SURE. Sorry, if Ohio St. played in the SEC WEST they would be the 5th best team behind Mississippi State, Alabama, Ole Miss and Auburn. Wait, let me correct myself, they would be 6th as they are not better than LSU either. And Urban Meyer knows it. What would Ohio St do if they had to play 5 top 10 teams in the course of a season, not one? The Buckeyes would not know what hit them if they ever had to play LSU at night under the lights in Death Valley. How does SI, ESPN or Bleacher Report think this great Buckeye team would fare if they had to play in consecutive weeks, LSU, Mississippi St, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Georgia … HMM?
So it was asked above by some dim-witted homers, “are there really four teams that are better than this one right now?” Let’s answer their question with the teams that are. The following are teams that are all better than the over-rated Buckeyes, who either/or have a much stronger strength of schedule, play better teams on a more consistent basis, have a stronger out of conference schedule and play in much stronger overall conferences:
- Mississippi State Bulldogs
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- Oregon Ducks
- Florida State
- TCU Horn Frogs
- Auburn Tigers
- Baylor Bears
- Arizona State Sun Devils
- Ole Miss Rebels
- Georgia Bulldogs
Let’s get real folks, the Buckeyes won one game. No more, no less. That makes them the best of a bad conference, not one of the top 4 teams in college football. If the NCAA playoff committee actually reward such a garbage resume when other teams actually play in competitive conferences and g by record only, we might as well just scrap it all and go back to only the Bowl Games and their conference affiliations. Even the late great Buckeye coach Woody Hayes would grab you by the neck and punch you or kick you if you ever considered the 2014 Buckeyes a top four team.

Wow you seem to know a lot about football. Wanna try again there, sport? Ohio state is so overrated. Oh yeah, the whole big ten, right? Like Michigan state too? Let me guess….we all just got lucky today, right?

SM: Actually I do know a lot about football.
You don’t think MSU got lucky, seriously? Did you watch the game?
Any given team can defeat any other team when there is a 4 to 5 week layoff between games. However, spare me the homerism if you think that The Big Ten is not a down conference. I will give OSU their credit, I did not think that they would defeat Alabama, much like everyone else who did.
Just curious, how did Minnesota, Maryland and Illinois do?
Speaking from a point of view of someone who actually played the sport, Bowl games are generally a joke and really don’t prove much of anything, unless there is something on the line being played for. Many teams do not prepare well for bowl games because they are used to the routine and preparation that football demands. Also, many matchups pit a team that might be motivated against a team that had hoped they were in a better bowl. This is how you get so many blow outs in bowls where one team is obviously not that much better than the other.
I can guarantee you that if all 38 bowl games were structured in a way to resemble the NCAA Field of 64, now 68, the results of bowls would look much different. When the game means survive and advance, there is motivation to win.
Finally, please don’t compare bowl game match ups to be the same of regular season ones. Other than the Sugar and Rose Bowls, any one watching the games can see that there is not the same intensity.
