An Inauspicious Start to Super Bowl XLVIII … Check Out Joe Namath’s Hilarious Botched Coin Toss (VIDEO) … SeaHawks Dominate Up at the Half 22-0 Over Peyton’s Broncos
So far the coin toss has been more eventful than the actual Super Bowl.
Leave it to Broadway Joe Namath to bring excitement to the coin toss. The man most famous for guaranteeing that the Jets would win almost caused a do-over coin flip. As the referee gave Joe the coin to flip, no one had asked the visiting Seattle Seahawks if they wanted heads or tails. Oops. Even for the refs, the Super Bowl can be a nerve racking experience. You could hear Phil Simms in the back ground say, nice catch.
The man made famous for his “guarantee” is guaranteed to go down in Super Bowl history once again after he entered midfield adorned in an eccentric fur coat. After referee Terry McAulay showed the special coin, he handed it over to Namath. McAulay then stepped back, seemingly signaling to Namath it was time. But the problem was McAulay hadn’t gotten a heads-or-tails calls from the “visiting” Seattle Seahawks. Namath, then, flipped the coin high into the air.
That’s when it appeared to dawn on McAulay what was happening.
Not wanting a major scandal on his hands, McAulay quickly stepped in and caught the coin before hit hit the ground, thus negating the premature flip. And he kept a smile on his face the whole time, even chuckling.

By the way, check out that fur on Joe Namath. Damn, it could have been 20 below and he would have been warm.
