Daily Commentary – Thursday, January 21st, 2010 – Self-Serving Reporters in Haiti, Exploitation or News Coverage?
- Dana comments on some controversy about whether reporters and networks are exploiting the disaster in Haiti to promote themselves and their shows. When does the media go too far in exploiting a crisis rather than covering it?
- What felt less comfortable was the sense that ABC was using Roberts’s achievement to sell a TV program. It’s not that the “GMA” promo was especially egregious. Every media outlet is promoting its own Haiti coverage as the best, which is standard practice.
But when the scope and intensity of the suffering among Haitians seems to grow up by the day, spotlighting a single act by a visiting reporter – like Anderson Cooper of CNN helping a wounded boy across a barricade – feels uncomfortable and, to be blunt, self-serving.

I agree with Dana.
btw. what was the take of that US fundraiser (if it already toke place)?
NL raised 83 million, Belgium 6, haven’t seen the numbers from the other countries, but it seems to me that we made every Haitian a millionaire.

SM: No, it takes place this weekend.
The sad reality is that the US has dumped billions of $’s into Haiti’ however, the corruption there has done nothing but make 80% of its people live below the poverty level. That is criminal.

what even more disturbing was, was the announcement that they were going to use cash from the Tsunami relief fund…and that took place in 2004.
made me feel cheated
yep, I say in about 4 years we will be donating again.
Or…..Maybe the US wants another state, that would do more good in a year then the progress Haiti made after 200 years
Just a thought when you are asked for donations to Haiti, keep this in mind, the tax payers of the USA donated over a billion dollars to Haiti, what is the point of rebuilding that country?
