You Can’t Be Serious … 10 Year Old Girl Suspended from School for Peppermint Oil

PUBLIC SCHOOL, reading, writing and suspensions for what?

When did public schools lose their way and their minds? A 10 year old girl was suspended from a Commack, NY school for bringing peppermint oil to school. What would have happened if she brought her Dick Tracy decoder ring?

Peppermint oil? Good grief, the girl is 10, do these school officials honestly think that this little girl had evil intent with the peppermint oil. Common sense has become an endangered species in our schools today. Imagine the suspensions today that would take place from the “Shoe & Tell” practices of school days of the past?

The Commack School District says in a statement on its Web Site the oil “is an unregulated over-the-counter drug.”

The girl’s mother, Corrine Morton-Greiner, said Thursday the implication her daughter Sara was taking an illicit substance to school is “infuriating.”

Morton-Greiner is asking for school officials to apologize and to revoke her daughter’s suspension.

Commack Superintendent James Feltman says there’s “no question” Sara’s actions violated the district’s code of conduct when she took the oil to school Monday.

One would think that maybe suspension could be afforded to things that were brought to school with the sole intent of harm.

Commack Superintendent James Feltman defended the school’s actions and said Sara was given a one-day in-school suspension. Her mother chose to keep her at home instead, he said. He said the parent could appeal the decision but that school officials would not be expunging the suspension or apologizing for the actions taken.

“This was a violation of our code of conduct, there’s no question about that,” Feltman said. “It’s uncontested that the child brought an over-the-counter substance to the school. It’s uncontested that she gave it to other children. We teach children from kindergarten not to do that. The reason is you may not know what allergies and what kind of problems other people have.”

I wholeheartedly agree with Superintendent Feltman. Allergies are a growing problem. If one of the children Sara shared the peppermint oil with had an adverse reaction or died, the school would be under fire for not addressing the issue. I applaud the school’s actions.

The solution to this problem is to keep your kids away from schools. Stupidity is contagious.

oh yeah. I have been a nurse for 15 years. I must say, there absolutely is an epidemic of pepermint oil abuse and the resulting allergic reactions. We really MUST outlaw candycanes!!! (please read *sarcasm*)

Zero Tolerance = Zero Intelligence. This Politically Correct world we live in today is completely out of control. The pendulum truly needs to swing far in the opposite direction to let reason and intelligence come back to the fore. Much can be blamed on Tort Law and lawsuit abuse which has run amok in our judicial system for far too long. Too many juries drinking PC Kool-Aid and rendering verdicts for plaintiffs in cases that should have never seen the light of day in the first place.
