Alienation – Internet has replaced personal one-on-one relationships in some cases. People often say things online they would never say in person. You can also spread rumors and lies to be hurtful or vengeful quickly, never having to look the person in the eye.
Situational Ethics – It’s ok to be dishonest, backstabbing or whatever because………Maybe it’s for a $1 million on a reality show, or maybe there’s some other rationalization, but instead of sticking to values that we say we believe in, we rationalize and justify.
Blaming – It seems we’ve gone from disciplining our children (even ourselves) for bad behavior by blaming TV, video games, Hip Hop, the school officials, the police, you name it. Our bad behavior and that of our children is someone else’s fault.
I hate to make the Holloway case the focus of every thread, but it’s a great example of what’s wrong. Think of Anita van der Sloot asking why Natalee would get in the car with her son. Notice she didn’t say I’m glad Natalee chose my son if she needed a ride or wanted to party a little longer, because he’s the kind of guy who would make sure she got back to her hotel safely. How many times did we hear that Beth should have warned her daughter, taught her daughter better. We heard ‘Where were the chaperones? Where were her friends?’ Everyone’s fault but the perps. It’s ok to do this because the tourists get wild and drunk. Joe Tacopina and Les Levine want to reward the bad behavior of the van der Sloots with a ton of money from lawsuits and portrays them as the victims. The Holloway case is full of things that show us what’s creating a society of violence and revenge and alienation.
Dr. Smallwood gave some very articulate and easy to understand insights on this on Dana’s show last night. No psychobabble, just straight forward common sense.
