One of Dana’s guest discussed this issue on his last show. Police officers regularly deal with the dregs of society, see the worst of humanity, put themselves in danger and yet there’s a stigma attached to seeking help. Police departments need to find an answer to the problem. Perhaps offering off-site confidential counseling for those officers who seek help and requiring counseling for those who seem at risk. As Dana said, we should remember that most police officers are good decent people doing a tough job. When I hear discussions of this, I not only think of a former police officer I was close to, but the images of a few in New Orleans during Katrina trying desperately to do their job while the Mayor and Governor and Feds failed to do theirs.
