Bush Twin, Barbara Bush, Has Purse Stolen in Buenos Aires, Argentina

While the Secret Service looked on from a distance, Bush twin Barbara had her purse stolen Bush Twinswhile dining at a Buenos Aires restaurant. Any reason why the Secret Service was not close enough to capture the thieves?

A pair of thieves removed the purse from under a table while Secret Service agents stood guard at a distance, La Nacion reported. La Nacion said its sources did not reveal which of the Bush daughters had her purse stolen.

CNN cited a law-enforcement source who was briefed on the incident as saying that “at no point were the protectees out of visual contact and at no point was there any risk of harm.” (ABC, the Blotter)

Oh really? It appears that the Argentine police state there no complaint of any such incident on file, the US Embassy in Buenos Aires said it has no comment, and  the White House, Secret Service and State Department also declined comment. I bet. Allowing individuals so close to the “First Daughter” that one could steal her purse. There is probably a lot of explaining going on as to how anyone could have got that close and made off with her purse while the Secret Service was looking on.

UPDATE: Argentina abuzz over Bush twin purse snatch report

Great PR for the Secret Service, couldn’t prevent a purse snatching. Of course the foreign media are having a field day with that.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) – Reports that an agile Argentine thief snatched the purse of one of the twin daughters of U.S. President George W. Bush while U.S. Secret Service agents were nearby had local media in a buzz on Wednesday.

“Bush’s bodyguards couldn’t handle San Telmo purse-snatcher,” read a headline in the Web site of official news agency Telam.

Telam said a government source, who asked not to be named, confirmed a report on an ABC News Web site blog regarding the robbery. Different local reports said the alleged purse-snatching happened on Sunday or on Monday.

A not very pleasant thought here: if someone got close enough to take the purse (usually, don’t women leave their purses at their feet while in restaurants? Was that the case here, I wonder?), that person might also have been in a position to put a drug in a drink ….

Crime is everywhere; however, if one cannot be protected by the Secret Service … that is an issue.

They did not catch the thieves, how?

Scared Monkeys: Once you cross the border you are at the mercy of another country. The secret service will not help.

it’s good to hear that the secret service agents weren’t drawn away from their main job of protecting the girl. purses can be replaced easily enough.

      _________

SM: True, but where were they that this could happen in the first place. One would like to believe that in a foreign country they are a little closer to the person they are guarding and on alert than normal.

Not exactly a good thing that this occured and has been reported over the world.

#9 The Secret Service WILL help IF they do their job properly. Just because they are in a different country will not stop the Secret Service. Remember because of who they are and who the girls are they have immunity.

I was just in Buenos Aires a couple of months ago
and we received a warning in one of the nicest hotels
to be very careful while out in the tourist areas -

Even after that warning – several people at the convention
were out shopping and had their cameras stolen -

I think you just have to be aware of your surroundings
      and pay attention -
(and of course, don’t just throw your purse under the
table in a foreign country – even if you do have the
secret service supposedly watching out for you)

Hell I had my camera stolen from me in New York. I asked someone to take a picture of my wife and I. He took the picture then ran away with my camera.

Great advice. Be aware of your surroundings and most of all pay attention. Very,Very good advice. If all people did this there would be alot less victims.
