Experts Ponder Roberts Influence on Supreme Court’s History

There is a conversation out there on the influence that John Roberts from a historical perspective. As potentially the second youngest Chief Justice, only John Marshall was younger, he has the opportunity to have a long and successful career in the Supreme Court.

The present court has been together for 10 years, a long time from a historical perspective. This cohesiveness has allowed strong bonds to forge, even between those who disagree ideologically. When John Roberts becomes Chief Justice, he will have to move slowly and develop his reputation gradually.

President Bush, will in the near future, put another Justice on the court to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. Odds are there will be another opening on the court in the next 3 years, so we have a period where the Bush legacy shall be felt for a long time on the Supreme Court. John Roberts will provide a  strong cornerstone for the Supreme Court.

And yet there is more. Roberts will be able to influence much more than the 8 other Supreme Court Justices.  The Chief Justice is the head of the whole Federal Court system.

As head of the federal judiciary, he will have administrative responsibility over 1,200 federal judges and a $5.43 billion budget.

Those responsibilities also include important appointive powers over judges who sit on courts such as the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, which can deport foreigners suspected of aiding terrorism, and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court, which considers government requests for wire taps.

So there is a great deal at stake, and with the tea leaves showing that he will have a preponderance of Democrats voting for him, John Roberts has the chance to provide a long and deep legacy.

Update: Of course, some feel that because John Roberts had a privileged upbringing, this should disqualify him from the court. Good to see that the New York Times Book Review endorses means testing.

Joran Leaving Prison and Aruba, Revisited.

The tempers and emotions of many are still flaring over last weekends release of Joran Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers. A complete reversal of fortunes from just one week earlier. As Linda Allison said to me,

It is a depressing and confusing situation for the Kalpoe brothers to be rearrested one week along with Joran friend’s Freddie one week and then be dealt with the setback of them all being released the following week”.

All that being said Joran was released and immediately flew off to The Netherlands. TheArubajim 009 VDS1 Joran Van Der Sloot blog has an interesting take on those events entitled, “Bunch Of Cowards…” where Legal Analyst Wendy Murphy reacts to Joran Van Der Sloot’s Departure….

“Hey! You didn’t have to book it to Holland,You did! Obviously you’re trying to run away and thats what guilty people do.

The following are more pictures from Joran Van der Sloot’s release from prison. I did not realize that Joran had a welcome home committee.

Leon Zheng, 27, Missing in Yosemite

Leon Zheng was hiking in the Yosemite National Park, and is now missing. He was hiking alone, and was expected back at work on Tuesday. When he did not show up, they initiated a search for him.

This area is dangerous for hiking, as illustrated by others that have gone missing in the same area; Hyundo Ahn and Micheal Ficery. Ahn was found about a month ago, a couple hundred yards off the trail. Ficery still has not been found.

From the Union Democrat:

Helicopters, dog teams and 60 people from at least five counties are searching for a missing Bay Area hiker in Yosemite National Park.

Leon Zheng, 27, began a solo trip somewhere in the park last Friday, Sept. 2. He was due back from his Labor Day weekend camping excursion on Monday.

When he failed to show up for work Tuesday in the San Jose area, a co-worker notified the park. Officials began a full-scale search for Zheng on Wednesday.

Search and rescue teams from Mariposa, Marin, Fresno, Mono and Santa Clara counties are assisting the Yosemite National Park team.

Yosemite spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman said Zheng is believed to have been backpacking in the areas of Tuolumne Meadows, White Wolf, Benson Lake and Seavey Pass.

Anyone in those areas between Sept. 2 and Wednesday is asked to call the Yosemite Search and Rescue office at 372-0216 or 379-1992 to say whether or not they saw a person matching Zheng’s description.

Zheng is described as having black hair and brown eyes and weighing about 150 pounds.

KANYE WEST; Haven’t You Said Enough?

Fresh off his Hurricane Katrina telethon embarrassment, Kanye West today appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres television chat show to makes even more ridiculous comments.

He said, “Back in the days when it was time to clean the kitchen I would try to sweep the dust under the kitchen sink instead of really taking care of it, and if you spilled something on that floor all that dust came right up in front of your face. That’s basically what the flood did.

“They have been trying to sweep us (African-Americans) under the kitchen sink and it was so in people’s faces and so on TV… that they couldn’t even hide it any more.
