Patriot Act Hearing has the Democrats Screaming Into the Wind
From Gateway Pundit:
The House Judiciary Committee hearing, with the two sides accusing each other of being irresponsible and undemocratic, came as President Bush was urging Congress to renew those sections of the post-Sept. 11 counterterrorism law set to expire in September.
Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the panel, abruptly gaveled the meeting to an end and walked out, followed by other Republicans. Sensenbrenner declared that much of the testimony, which veered into debate over the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, was irrelevant.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., protested, raising his voice as his microphone went off, came back on, and went off again.
“We are not besmirching the honor of the United States, we are trying to uphold it,” he said. The Republican chairman walked off with the gavel, leaving Democrats shouting into turned-off microphones at a raucous hearing Friday on the Patriot Act.

Looks like this would have been fun to watch.

Everyone should have watched it. I’ve got a post about it on my blog (Swerve Left). About the only point the Republicans could say in their favor was that the U.S. isn’t quite as bad as North Korea or Stalinist Russia at this point. I never thought I’d see the day when standards for human rights were set so low in the U.S.
I’m absolutely disgusted that Sensenbrenner is my congressman. He’s drunk with power and completely out of control. As I told him in an email, “You know what they say about absolute power…”
“I never thought I’d see the day when standards for human rights were set so low in the U.S. ”
Good grief!!! What human rights violations are you referring to . The ones that were violated on Sept 11, the ones violated in the torcher rooms of Iraq, Kosovo,Sudan, Afganistan, Iran , Bosnia, TREBLINKA, Lubyanka,The killing fields , Battaan OR the POWs that are given 3 hots and a cot in air conditioned spaces, prayer rugs, quorans, and 5 prayer calls a day when what is deserved is immediate and summary execution.
You say we are human rights violators when our own military broke the Abu Graib story and prosecuted the offenders.
There have been 60 visits by congress to Gitmo ( how apt a name is that for this), 29 congrssional hearings of fact, and weekly visits by every liberal, modlycoddling , busybody organization on the planet. In all of this “fact finding” one unholy book was miss handled and one kicked across the floor.
Unless you can bring some facts before congress or the press; you need to shut your pie hole and return a pastime more suitable to your disposition. Your niavete is equal to your ignorance and only surpassed by your disloyalty to the nation which , it so happens, give you the freedom to exhibit both and me the freedom to to expose the utter fruitlessness of your intellectual capability.
All you have to do is wait and the Republicans will overplay their hand. Sensenbrenner and Cheney are just two examples. They did have a win this week as they forced Durbin to apologize. The Democrats should never apologize. I am sure he bowed to pressure from his Jewish constituants and he should have apologized to them, but NOT the US Senate and surely not the Republicans. It certainly didn’t stop them from using it against them. The IRC found abuses at Gitmo as soon as they were allowed in, but the press in this country glossed over it because the wounds were so raw about 9/11. Abuses are rampent in this war and many are being committed by our own people. The Repubs are beginning to look like what they are and I say AMEN to that!
