Republican Wishful Thinking from the Socialist Republic of Vermont
Republicans can only dream that the Democratic party would not support Socialist, Bernie Sanders in his Senate run for retiring Jumping Jim Jefford’s seat. If the VT Democrats party ever attempted anything so stupid, Jeffords would run anyhow, split the Democrats and liberal vote and have a Republican walk into the Senate seat. For that reason alone, it will never happen.
Conventional political wisdom holds that Sanders will get the backing of Democrats, support he has seen in almost all of his seven congressional races. Only once did a Democrat formally oppose Sanders, but that candidate did not have the full support of the state party.
To date, Sanders has received favorable comments from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, and Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, who is heading up the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. However, there has been no official support offered.
Any delay in support for Sanders by the Democratic party is most likely done more as a ploy to entice the Republican party to spend money and resources in VT rather than thinking of it what it really is; a lost cause for the Republican party. Unless there is a three way race in this state, Republicans have as much a chance of winning this Senate seat in VT as does Howard Dean making Southerners believe that The Book of Job is from the New Testament.
In other words, it is just unfortunately not going to happen.
