David Goes Dancing with Goliath
Tonight in the Chicago bracket of the NCAA Field of 64,#1 University of Illinois takes on my alma mater
#16 Fairleigh Dickinson University. I should take solace in the fact that FDU was rated the #63 team in the Field of 64 as they did not have to suffer the indignity of the 64-65 play in game.
Although no 16 seed has ever beat a number 1 seed in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, there’s always a first and why not tonight on St Patrick’s Day? FDU has always played well when they have made the tournament. They have made the Big Dance 4 times, 3 times as a 16 seed and once as a 15.
NCAA Tournament History
1998 #2 UConn 93, #15 FDU 85
1988 #1 Purdue 94, #16 FDU 79
1985 #1 Michigan 59, #16 FDU 55
However, no one, no one that is that is an FDU grad will ever forget “in 1985, against Bill Frieder-led Michigan, the Wolverines barely advanced to the second round by upending FDU, 59-55.” They had them and it slipped away.
Here’s to David, to Cinderella, to a miracle happening in Indianapolis this evening. Go Knights!!!
UPDATE AT THE HALF:
Fairleigh Dickinson 31
Illinois 32

One nice thing in the world, FDU probably will win a NCAA tournament game before Notre Dame wins a NCAA title. BWAAHAHAHAHA
Yes, they managed to lose to Holy Cross the other night in a first round game of the NIT in South Bend. OUCH. I’m sorry how did the Blue & Maze do this year? Michigan 13-18. Hmmm … 8th place …. behind Northwestern???
Da part is that I was talking NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL!!!!
BWAAHAHAHAHA
Is that how far it has fallen of the map….
Go Georgia Tech!
STAY ON THREAD YOUNG MAN.
Sorry, Red.
My Illini just vanquished thine Knights, 67-55!
Of course, you can threaten to bite off our kneecaps with your limbless torso, but the victory is still ours!
Seriously, though, I have to hand it to them, they played a tough first half and gave the top-ranked team in the country a decent scare for awhile. Not bad.
Mr Right
Of course you have to understand the thrill it is for a small school like ours to make the Tournament, let alone play well and not lose by 30.
I thought for one second in the first half that maybe Illinois took them to lightly and the upset was possible. Then at the half the Ill coach must have read the the riot act. Oh well, I cant be too disappointed. A good performance and after all I have Illinois winning it all, it would have severely destroyed my brackets.
