It is hard to believe that it has been 3 years since the disappearance of Natalee Hollway in Aruba. Three years since the last night on Aruba of the Mountain Brook, AL high school trip. Three years since that fateful moment when Natalee Holloway left Carlos N’ Charlies at closing in a car with Deepak Kalpoe, Satish Kalpoe and Joran Van der Sloot.
A missing person case that now three years later does not seem to be any close to being solved than in the initial days of the investigation. Why is that? Why were there no leads that would lead to an arrest of the obvious suspects in this case? Why were there court obstructions to re-arrests when the evidence was obvious and confessions were made?
Answers may not have been answered yet in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway; however, changes have happened in both Mountain Brook and Aruba where the two locations will forever be linked and will never be the same.
Charlotte Botsford is a Mountain Brook youth pastor. She said Natalee Holloway’s senior trip disappearance has forced parents to scale down the annual tradition.
“From what I can tell it has changed significantly. A lot of students are going to the beach or the lake and they are taking a lot parents with them,” Botsford recalled. (NBC13)
One of the legacies of Natalee Holloway is awareness. No one can look upon any vacation paradise as safe no matter what tourism brochures claim. All too often we make are selves aware of our surroundings during our every day life; however, when on vacation those walls are taken down because we have been lead to believe that its OK, “no problem mon.” That is not the case anymore.
“You have to vigilant at all times especially as a woman it’s very important, be cautious in the world we’re in. No place is perfectly safe. Not even Mountain Brook,” Ford pointed out.
Dave Holloway tries to be optimistic and hopes that the recent sonar searches off Aruba may solve the mystery as to what happened to Natalee. A search that would have appeared to have ended prematurely with so many potential targets still needed to be investigated. One hopes that it will be resumed in the near future.
Dave Holloway said ocean floor sonar searches off the coast of Aruba found about 170 targets.
Due to bad weather and technological limitations, they were only able to examine a handful of those targets.
Holloway hopes to resume the searches as soon as possible.
However, there are still many answers that Aruba needs to answer to as to what happened to Natalee Holloway. No one just disappears. Especially on an island so small. Especially when little to no competent investigation or real interrogation was done to the very people who were last seen with Natalee. People, Deepak, Satish and Joran, who lied through their teeth from the outset as to what their involvement was.
