Relatives of James Lee DiMaggio want to know if he’s the real father of Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old he’s accused of kidnapping after killing her mother and younger brother.

The family requested DNA samples from Hannah and 8-year-old brother Ethan for a paternity test after learning DiMaggio left a $112,000 life insurance benefit to the kids’ grandmother.

“He expected the grandmother to take care of the two children with the money,” family spokesman Andrew Spanswick told San Diego 10. “He stated he did not want it to go to their parents because they were having marital problems and he didn’t trust them with the money on their own.”

“We are requesting DNA samples from Hannah and anything they can get from Ethan,” Spanswick told the station. “There are rumors Jim was the children’s real father. The parents didn’t marry until 2002. We think it’s strange he left them so much money with no explanation.”

Could this story get any more strange? It began with the some what different relationship between James Lee DiMaggio and the Anderson family. Then the twisted double murder of 8 year old Ethan Anderson and his mom, 44 year old Christina Anderson, who were both found in DiMaggio’s burned down home. He then abducts Hannah Anderson, where we later learn from one of her friends that he had a crush on her or at least more than a passing interest. Then kidnapping and murder suspect DiMaggio is killed and Hannah is found safe and unharmed. There was no reports as to what happened to Hannah during her abduction and the police said she was a victim. However, we would then learn as reported at CNN that letters from Hannah Anderson were found in the home of James DiMaggio. Letters? Why would he have letters from Hannah?

A handwritten note, handcuff box, camping equipment and a DNA swab kit were among the items found by San Diego deputies in the burned home and garage of James DiMaggio.

DiMaggio was shot and killed by FBI agents in Idaho after allegedly kidnapping Hannah Anderson,16, this month.

The list of items is included in a search warrant and affidavits CNN affiliate KFMB obtained.
