Not Just the 40th Anniversary of Moon Landing … Also 40th of Dem Leader Ted Kennedy Killing Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick

My how time flies when one is a Senator from Massachusetts.

Would Ted Kennedy have kept his political office today if he killed Mary Joe Kopechne July 18, 2009?

It has been 40 years since Senator Ted Kennedy killed Mary Joe Kopechne, known as the Chappaquiddick Incident. Mary Jo is gone, God rest her soul, and Ted Kennedy is still a US Senator. We wonder what is wrong with our politicians today? In many cases we need only look to the past to explain our representation today.

Kennedy was driving a 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 with one of the women, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, as his passenger, when Kennedy drove off Dike Bridge into Poucha Pond between Chappaquiddick Island and Cape Poge barrier beach.

On the night of July 18, 1969, Ted Kennedy left a party on Martha’s Vineyard’s Chappaquiddick Island with  28 year old Mary Jo Kopechne when Kennedy drove off Dike Bridge into Poucha Pond. Ted Kennedy escaped the vehicle in the water and swam to safety, but Kopechne died in the submerged car. Kennedy left the scene of the accident and did not call authorities until after Kopechne’s body was discovered the following day. Kennedy would eventually turn himself in and get a slap on the wrist.

On July 25, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was given a sentence of two months in jail, suspended. That night, Kennedy gave a national broadcast in which he said, “I regard as indefensible the fact that I did not report the accident to the police immediately,” but denied driving under the influence of alcohol and denied any immoral conduct between him and Kopechne.

Judge Boyle also said that “negligent driving appears to have contributed to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.”Under Massachusetts law, Boyle could have ordered Kennedy’s arrest, but he chose not to do so.

For his actions in the “negligent driving appearing to have contributed to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne,” Ted Kennedy was re-elected as MA Senator in 1970 and ever since. Could someone from Massachusetts explain how such a negligent individual who left the seen of an accident and failed to report it is continually elected?

Can anyone imagine this happening today and a politician surviving the incident? Politicians are ousted for affairs, let alone contributing to the death of an individual and leaving the scene of a crime so that authorities could not see the condition they were in at the time of the accident.
