David Letterman Affair Scandal Boosts Rating … Rewarding Bad Behavior & Hypocrisy

Affair scandal is suck a ratings winner that maybe Letterman will make this a permanent piece on the show like the Top 10 List. Maybe he can call it “Stupid Dave getting Tricks”.

Hmm, how can I turn this affair into a ratings grabber?

The Letterman apology for his cheating ways with having affairs with staffers of The David Letterman Show have boosted his ratings. How sad that Letterman be rewarded for bad behavior and embarrassing his wife.

His apologies meant another big night in the ratings. The Nielsen Co.’s overnight measurement of the nation’s 56 biggest markets netted Letterman’s “Late Show” a 4.2 rating – higher than anything rival NBC had in prime-time.

Nielsen didn’t immediately have an estimate of the size of Letterman’s audience. The overnight rating was slightly less than Thursday’s show, when 5.8 million people watched Letterman say he had been the victim of a $2 million blackmail threat that led him to reveal he had sex with staff members.

ABC asks the question whether David Letterman’s apology will work. Work how? It already has in the ratings and to those in TV land, what else matters? Letterman has been public about his being a “victim” in all this, but what about the staffers? And what about his wife!

David Letterman has straddled the line between remorse and humor ever since he revealed that he was the victim of an alleged extortion plot by a CBS News employee who threatened to expose his sexual affairs with staff members.

Fellow comedians say he has struck the right balance.

Actually, what about his wife! What balance has he struck, making fun of an affair because he has ridiculed others for the same indiscretion? Why make such a person thing public if it wasn’t for ratings? To continually make mock of his cheating ways as some type of a Letterman skit might seem amusing to the audience and a ratings grabber, but what does the wife think behind the scenes to constantly have this put out there?

On Monday night’s show, Letterman opened with a reference to South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, whose own extramarital affair made him a previous Letterman target.

“I mean, I’ll be honest with you folks — right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail,” he joked about Sanford’s infamous phony alibi.

“I got into the car this morning,” he added, “and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me. Ouch.”

The entire matter just proves that Letterman is a hypocrite. By making fun of himself that is supposed to justify him making mock of others in the past and into the future. His fellow comedians and Libs come to his defense and state that he has acted superbly. I wonder if they would feel the same way if it were a conservative Republican caught is an affair? I think we already know the answer.

The libs at the Washington Post are already saying that Letterman should not be put on the same level as a cleric or a Congressman. Really? No one is saying that clerics or politicians should not be held accountable, but why is Letterman off limits? It’s ok to make fun of others as a bit of comedy to millions of TV on-lookers but when it’s Letterman’s turn to face the affair music, it’s some how different? Why? Letterman does not stand above anyone. He cheated like the rest of them and now makes light of it for ratings.

One of many sad things about recent stanzas in the ballad of David Letterman is that now, in all media, Dave will be lumped in with other sexually misbehaving celebrities, even though he stands head and heart above most of them.

Is this the same reason why Roman Polanski is defended by the same people and that what he did was really not rape, rape. As News Busters writes, “does Shales think clowns and jesters should be free of the charge of hypocrisy?”

The end result is most people would say that this is a private matter and they needed to discuss it with their wife, doctor and clergy to privately deal with a break in the vow of trust. The David Letterman affair is no joke.  

The hypocrisy is off the charts on this one. Let alone the long discussion that there has been since the early 80’s of sex in the workplace and inappropriate behavior. In a Fortune 500 company this would have got Dave a call into HR. However, on TV it just gets him ratings.

Why would Letterman be discussing with his audience the affair as if it was a low rent joke. But in the end, it seems to be all for ratings and Letterman has become over the years just that, a low rent joke.
