Outspoken Oakland Post Newspaper Editor Chauncey Bailey Shot to Death … “We believe he was targeted.”

57 year old Chauncey Bailey, the outspoken editor of the Oakland Post was gunned Chauncey Baileydown yesterday in what police are saying was not a random act of violence, but more like an intended hit. This is hardly a way to debate an issue by those who may have disagreed with Bailey. If this was an intended hit, which many in law enforcement believe it to be, it most certainly would be a form of censoring free speech. Maybe this story should get more air play by the MSM that two helicopters colliding chasing a suspect for ratings.

The outspoken news editor of the Oakland Post was shot to death Thursday near a downtown courthouse in what police suspect was a deliberate hit.

Chauncey Bailey, 57, was killed around 7:30 a.m., Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said. Witnesses told police a man wearing a mask shot Bailey multiple times and then fled.

Police had no motive for the killing but said it did not appear to be random. Holmgren said investigators would look into any possible connections with Bailey’s work. (AP)

Chauncey Bailey was known for his persistent and tenacious brand of questioning reporting on city government corruption, the entertainment business or rappers.  Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan stated, ”We believe he was targeted.”

“He was very controversial,” said Derrick Nesbitt, who worked with Bailey on a cable access channel called “Soul Beat” from 1997 to 2004. “He was tenacious and would not let people off the hook, whether he was reporting on corruption in city government, the entertainment business or among rappers. He ruffled a lot of feathers because of it.” (SF Chronicle)

UPDATE II: Cops Link Black Muslim Group to Editor’s Murder

Police said they recovered firearms linked to the slaying of an Oakland journalist during a series of early morning raids Friday targeting members of a Black Muslim splinter group that operates a chain of bakeries.

“The search warrant yielded several weapons and other evidence of value including evidence linking the murder of Chauncey Bailey to members of the Your Black Muslim Bakery,” said Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan, who said the raids were part of a yearlong investigation into a variety of violent crimes. A 19-year-old handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery admitted to police Friday night that he ambushed and killed Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, investigators said.

Police said Devaughndre Broussard told them he killed Bailey because he was angry over stories the journalist had written about the bakery, its employees and leaders in the past. Investigators said Broussard also was concerned about stories that he thought Bailey might be working on.

Bailey had apparently been working on a story about the group and its finances, authorities said.
