Roman Polanski arrested in Switzerland
So much for personally receiving the lifetime achievement award Zurich Film Festival … director Roman Polanski arrested.
Polanski, 76, was taken into custody trying to enter Switzerland on Saturday, Zurich police said. A spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry said Polanski was arrested upon arrival at the airport.
He has lived in France for decades to avoid being arrested if he enters the United States and declined to appear in person to collect his Academy Award for Best Director for “The Pianist” in 2003.
The director pleaded guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl. But he fled the United States before he could be sentenced, and U.S. authorities have had a warrant for his arrest since 1978.
Is it possible that after all this time that Polanski will be extradited back the the US and finally be sentenced for the ”drugging and raping a 13-year-old child?” It does make one wonder why now after so many other opportunities to make an arrest.
The Smoking Gun has the grand jury testimony transcripts of the sexual assault.
The Gothamist reports that Gailey, now Samantha Geimer, has asked for the charges to be dropped, as have Polanski’s lawyers who cited possible misconduct by the LA DA’s office and court. However, since when does the victim tell the DA whether a crime should be prosecuted or not?
Polansky should be sentenced for his alleged rape of a 13 year old; however, after all this time it does seem rather coincidental that Polansky was arrested in Switzerland amidst the recent IRS-UBS Swiss banking incident.
