Hans Reiser Leads Police to Body of Missing Wife Nina Reiser in Deal after Found Guilty of 1st Degree Murder

Nina Reiser had been missing since Sept. 3, 2006, after she dropped off her two children for a visit with their father Hans Reiser. Nina Reiser was never seen or heard from again. Her husband Hans Reiser had denied any involvement in her disappearance; however, he was the prime suspect and tried for her murder and disappearance. Hans Reiser was convicted of his wife’s murder on April 28, 2008 by a California jury of first degree murder in the disappearance of his wife, even though her body had not been found.

After all this time and the many denials, Hans Reiser has now finally lead police to the body of Nina Reiser. Her body was found on a small grave. The area where the body was recovered was less than a mile from the house where Hans Reiser lived with his mother.

The abrupt about-face came just two days before 44-year-old Hans Reiser was due in court to face sentencing on a conviction of first-degree murder returned by a jury in April.

The discovery late Monday afternoon came after Reiser, handcuffed to another of his attorneys, William Du Bois, led police through Redwood Regional Park, defense attorney Richard Tamor said.

The body was found in a grave about 4 feet by 4 feet, Tamor said. Reiser did not have difficulty locating the spot, the attorney said: “He went right to it.”

Reiser, who had proclaimed his innocence from the day his estranged wife, Nina, was last seen in September 2006, agreed to reveal the location of her body in exchange for a deal in which he would be sentenced for second-degree murder rather than the first-degree murder conviction a jury returned against him in April, according to officials with knowledge of the case.

Reiser also acknowledged that he and his wife had fought and that he had strangled her, a source familiar with the investigation said.

The maximum sentence Reiser could receive for second-degree murder is 15 years to life. Reiser had faced a term of 25 years to life under his first-degree murder conviction.

 Body found in Oakland Hills is Nina Reiser

Reiser, accompanied by his attorney William Du Bois, led Oakland Police and Alameda County District Attorney’s officials to the body early Monday afternoon.

The body was down a steep hillside that runs next to a hiking trail in the 8200 block of Skyline Boulevard. That location is just a few miles from where Reiser lived.

Just before 6 p.m. prosecutor Paul Hora arrived on the scene and was taken to the gravesite.
