When it comes to “Big Air,”when they say do not try this at home, they are trained professionals, they mean it. Watching X-Games 13 last night was liking watching an old showing of The Wide World of Sports with the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
I admit it, I love watching the X-Games. It reminds me of the daring stunts that my friends and I did as kids, but never anything quite like this. I am far from the demographic that the X-Games is seeking; however, I am intrigued and blown away by the skill and daring of these athletes. The push the envelop to the limit and last night on live TV on ESPN, Jake Brown took a fall from 40–50 feet in the air where most all watching thought he died hitting the wooden ramp.
This is not your average skateboard competition and the Big Air event at X-Games 13 almost turned into what most thought was a fatality watching the event. Jake Brown competing in Big Air and leading after the first run attempted a 720 and then to a 540. Jake nailed the 720; however, the 540 turned into absolute disaster as Jake Brown fell an estimated 40 to 50 feet in the air and landed with a thud on the wooden ramp below. His body lay on the ramp lifeless for the longest time. No one had slammed this hard ever. I thought I had actually witnessed someone die live on my TV. To everyones amazement, not only did Jake Brown not die, the kid got off the ramp, sat up and walked … that’s right walked off the Big Air ramp to the standing ovation of all at the Staple Center.
