Delaware US Senate Election: Castle Says No To Write In Campaign Against O’Donnell (R) and Coons (D)

Castle says no to write in campaign and endorsement …

Republican primary loser Mike Castle says he will not be the next sore loser Republican establishment Lisa Murkowski; however, he  still cannot find the class to endorse  Christine O’Donnell, the winner of the GOP US Senate primary in Delaware, as he had stated he would during the campaign. Mike Castle stated that he will say no to a “write-in” campaign for the US Senate in Delaware.

Longtime Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) announced late Wednesday that he will not launch a write-in bid for Senate this fall, ceding the stage to Tea Party favorite Christine O’Donnell (R) and New Castle County Executive Chris Coons (D).

Castle said he was “humbled” by the support and encouragement he has received since his primary loss to O’Donnell, but after giving a write-in bid careful consideration, he decided against it.

Castle just says no to endorsing the winner of the Republican primary. What an honorable republican that the GOP could have counted on with a necessary and needed vote against Democrats.

Castle, notably, did not endorse Christine O’Donnell, the tea party favorite who ousted him in the GOP primary earlier this year, in his statement leaving the race.

So why did Castle finally make the decision to say no to a write in campaign? Was it because it was a long shot at best at winning? Or was it because as the latest Rasmussen poll showed that a write in effort be long time “moderate” Congressman Castle would actually take votes away from the Democrat and give Christine O’Donnell a better chance of winning in November? What does that tell you as to who was supporting Castle if he took votes away from “the bearded Marxist” Coons?

It is possible that a write-in campaign by Congressman Mike Castle could hurt Democrat Chris Coons more than Republican Christine O’Donnell in the Delaware campaign for U.S. Senate.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Delaware voters finds Coons with 49% support, while O’Donnell earns 40% of the vote. Castle, a longtime congressman who lost to O’Donnell in the state’s GOP Primary, picks up five percent (5%). Another five percent (5%) remain undecided. To see survey questions, click here.

Conservatives 4 Palin is optimistic about O’Donnell’s chances.

O’Donnell was actually winning independents even if you assume all of Castle’s indy support in the poll goes to Coons. The biggest reason for optimism in this race is not only O’Donnell’s war chest but the fact that she can get back into this race just by consolidating the conservative/Republican vote. She’s performing about as well as she would need to among Democrats and independents to make this a race. She has room to grow simply by winning back more of her base of support.
