Delaware Senate Election 2010: Beau Biden Out … Mike Castle (R) 56%, Chris Coons (D) 27%

Can Republicans add the Delaware US Senate seat to their side of the ledger come 2010? It appears so after DE state attorney general Beau Biden’s decision not to run for his father, VP Joe Biden’s, long time Senate seat.   The latest Rasmussen poll has the Republican Mike Castle far out in the lead over Democrat Chris Coons, 56% to 27%.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely Delaware voters shows longtime GOP congressman Mike Castle leading New Castle County Executive Chris Coons 56% to 27%. Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, and 13% are undecided.

The survey was taken Monday night following the announcement by Biden, the state’s Democratic attorney general, that he will not run for the Senate. In October, Castle led Biden 47% to 42% in a hypothetical match-up for the seat Biden’s father, now the vice president, held for 36 years.

Will Beau Biden’s decision cost Democrats another US Senate seat? It looks that way, although Biden was actually trailing in previous Rasmussen polls leading up to his decision to not run. It could just be that the Democrat bad writing is so far on the wall that not even the heir apparent and Biden in waiting to take over Joe Biden’s seat can with stand the backlash against Obama’s policies and the Democrats. The fact that in this environment his father was the VP for Obama in a long standing Democrat Senate seat was a detriment.

Who could have possibly imagined that Democrats could lose such long standing Democrat seats like those of Edward Kennedy in Massachusetts and Joseph Biden in Delaware just a year ago?
