16 year old Michaela Wells, a USA National Miss Nebraska Teen, was reported missing Monday, March 3, 2014 in Bellevue, Nebraska. Michaela Wells was last seen at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday by her parents, at her home in the Golden Hills Subdivision at 36th Street and Highway 370 in Bellevue. Michaela took out the trash around 8:30 p.m. Sunday wearing jeans, a dress coat and slip-on black pumps, but did not return. Wells is white, 5-feet-6, 120 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair. Her family does not believe Wells ran away, but the authorities are not so sure. Wells’ name has been entered into the state and national law enforcement database as a missing juvenile; however, the Bellevue police don’t suspect foul play.
Wells told her family she was stepping outside to take out the trash. She was wearing jeans, a dress coat and slip-on black pumps. She left her heavy winter coat and cellphone inside the house.
Twenty minutes passed before Wells’ family grew worried that she hadn’t returned. Her father looked inside and outside the house. He then drove around the neighborhood searching for her.
Her parents first thought Wells had seen a friend outside and hitched a ride to IHOP. But she didn’t return home that night or the next.
Wells’ mother, Theresa Norris, filed a police report at 9 p.m. Monday.
“When she says she’s going to step out of the house for a minute, she always comes back in,” Norris said. “It’s not like Michaela to disappear without telling us.”
Hmm, slip-on black pumps to take out the trash? I will say this, the extent of time she has been missing is a bit troubling. However, whether she ran away or was taken, she needs to be found and returned home.
Bellevue teen missing since Sunday night
However, Norris said Wells is not the type to take off and not say anything. In fact, Norris said, the girl wasn’t even dressed for the weather.
“This isn’t a sign of a teenager saying, ‘I’m gonna go run away on you,’” Norris said. “It’s just not like her.”
Norris said police have searched the girl’s cellphone and other electronics to determine whether the girl had plans to run away. Police have not yet ruled that out.
UPDATE I: Let me just follow up by saying, that I hope that the police are correct in that this may be a teen runaway and that there was no foul play involved. That being said, there is a part of me that always harkens back to the case of Tim Miller’s missing daughter Laura, who the police first dismissed as a runaway. A note to all, we do consider everything.
UPDATE II: No Evidence of Abduction in Case of Missing Teen.
Bellevue Police Chief Mark Elbert has stated that this is not the first time Michaela has left home. However, in the earlier instances she returned the following day.
Bellevue Police Chief Mark Elbert says his department is devoting a great deal of resources to locating Michaela Wells who disappeared on Sunday night.
Asked at a news conference Wednesday afternoon if there was any evidence that she was abducted or in danger, the chief said, “I cannot confirm either one of those to be true.”
He said police do not have information that she was abducted against her will but he said that possibility is part of their investigation. He says he’s not ruling that out.
