SPIKE LEE … JUST TWEET IT … IT MUST BE IN THE TWEET …

Last week it was reported that Spike Lee tweeted the address of George Zimmerman, the individual who caused the huge controversy when he shot and killed Trayvon Martin in Sanford, FL. Our first thought was, how irresponsible to do such a thing when there was a mob mentality to get Zimmerman. Who knew just how irresponsible that TWEET was.

Two messages were posted to Lee’s official Twitter account, one Friday and one Saturday, with a street address and the words “EVERYBODY REPOST THIS.” Both messages were still visible on Lee’s account Sunday morning. Lee has tweeted numerous times about Martin’s death.

This might be a lesson to all and especially those like Spike Lee who seem more intent of fueling the fires of racism and emotion in the tragic death of  Trayvon Martin, rather than getting to the bottom of what actually occurred between George Zimmerman and Martin. Spike Lee tweeted the incorrect address of George Zimmerman and now an elderly couple lives in fear. Way to be responsible Spike. The address that was foolishly tweeted was actually the residence on Edgewater Circle of 72 year old David McClain and his 70 year old wife Elaine.

With Twitter and Facebook continuing to explode with posts purporting to contain the address of George Zimmerman, property records and interviews reveal that the home is actually the longtime residence of a married Florida couple, both in their 70s, who have no connection to the man who killed Trayvon Martin and are now living in fear due to erroneous reports about their connection to the shooter.

The mass dissemination of the address on Edgewater Circle in Sanford–the Florida city where Martin was shot to death last month--took flight last Friday when director Spike Lee retweeted a tweet containing Zimmerman’s purported address to his 240,000 followers.

This is what happens when rank amateurs jump the gun and do not do any due diligence in reporting. As the Daily Caller asks, “If you’re against vigilantes taking matters into their own hands, except when it comes to dealing with George Zimmerman.” One has to wonder whether this will arise in a law suit.

UPDATE I: Elderly couple flee home after Spike Lee gives out their address as residence of George Zimmerman.

A school-cafeteria lunch lady and her husband have received hate mail, unwanted visits from reporters and fearful inquiries from neighbors — all because their Sanford-area address is being disseminated on Twitter as belonging to Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman, her son said late Tuesday.

The woman, 70, who has a heart condition, and her husband, 72, have temporarily moved to a hotel to avoid the spotlight and possible danger, said son Chip Humble of Longwood.

UPDATE II: Elderly Couple who was forced to flee home following Spike Lee’s irresponsible TWEET hires the Morgan & Morgan law firm to represent them. We had a feeling this would happen after Spike Lee “JUST TWEETED IT”.

“At this point, they have retained us to protect their interests” and their safety, attorney Matt Morgan said of Elaine and David McClain, an elderly Sanford-area couple in their 70s.

What is ironic is that Spike Lee had once made movies about the dangers of the mob mentality. I guess that is all in the past. PJ Media has the Tweet of Spike Lee’s apology. Fox Nation has the apology as well. Although Lee is probably just sorry he got the address incorrect, not the fanning of the flames.

Or as Jonah Goldberg tweets in response, “Shorter @SpikeLee I meant to direct death threats and intimidation to someone else’s house. My bad.”
