NCAA Football: Big Upset in The Big House … Appalachian State Stuns # 5 Michigan, 34-32

Hail to the Victors … although this time it’s not who you think it might be. They are partying tonight in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Boone, North Carolina. And well they should be.

That’s why they play the game. It’s also the reason why college football is one of the greatest sports to watch. In one of the most implausible and unthinkable turn of events, 1AA Appalachian State beat perennial Big Ten power, the Michigan Wolverines 34–32. The Wolverines can kiss any chance of a BSC National Championship goodbye after 1 game. Here is a bit of advice to Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, don’t ever go for 2 unless it is at the end of the game. Your less that stellar decision cost Michigan the game.

This is not a misprint and it is not April 1st. The two time Division 1AA champs, Appalachian State Mountaineers pulled off the upsets of all college upsets as no division 1AA college had ever beaten a ranked division 1 school.

Alas, that’s the beauty of college football.

No Division I-AA team had beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll from 1989-2006, and it’s unlikely that it happened after Division-I subdivisions were created in 1978. (Breitbart)

What is most stunning about the game was it was not a fluke. Appalachian State actually lead most of the game and out played Michigan. It was not until the 4th quarter when it appeared that the Wolverines were going to steal the victory. The Mountaineers lead 28–17 at the half and 31–20 in the 3rd quarter. However, it took a blocked 37 yard field goal with 6 seconds left on the final play of the game to secure the Appalachian State victory.
