Stupid Crime of the Week Award: Stolen GPS Devices Lead Police to Long Island Suspects

Note to thieves: Do not steal GPS devices. By their definition they are a  Global Positioning Systems used to determine locations. This warning was obviously not heeded by three thieves in Long Island, NY who stole 14 GPS devices from the Town of Babylon Public Works garage in Lindenhurst, NY. Of course once the Public Works Department realized their GPS’ were stolen, they turned on their GPS system and it showed that one of the devices was inside an individuals home. Needless to say the police were on their way to investigate.

According to Suffolk County police, the GPS devices were stolen Monday night from the Town of Babylon Public Works garage in Lindenhurst. The town immediately tapped its GPS system, and it showed that one of the devices was inside a house. Police said that when they arrived there, Kurt Husfeldt, 46, had the device in his hands.

Husfeldt was charged with criminal possession of stolen property. His 13-year-old son also was arrested on grand larceny charges.

Making matters even worse for these not so bright criminals was the fact that they had no idea  what the  GPS devices were. The thieves thought they were stealing cell phones. Brilliant.
