In the end, it was not never that close …
The final ballot count has been made in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election and the winner is incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser. The final tally has Prosser defeating challenger Joanne Kloppenburg by 7,316 votes. Kloppenburh has until 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 20 to request a tax payer paid statewide recount.
A canvass of vote totals from the state’s 72 counties finalized Friday afternoon shows Prosser beating Kloppenburg, an assistant attorney general, by 7,316 votes. The final canvass of the April 5 vote was completed 10 days after the election, the maximum allowed by state law.
The margin – 0.488% – is within the 0.5% limit that would allow Kloppenburg to request a statewide recount at taxpayers’ expense.
What a reversal of fortune after it was discovered that many votes had never been counted from Waukesha County. The embarrassing result was Kloppenburg prematurely declaring victory. In the end, it looks like victory for Prosser. April 15, 2011 Statement from
Campaign Spokesman Brian J. Nemoir Regarding Completion of all Statewide Canvases and Justice David Prosser’s Victory.
More from the AP:
Prosser’s campaign issued a statement Friday declaring victory.
“Today, the will of the electorate is clear with … Justice David Prosser re-elected,” the statement said.
Kloppenburg issued a statement that said only that her campaign would weigh a recount request and she would make an announcement no later than Wednesday. If she requests a recount, the state will pay for it because the margin between the candidates is less than a half of a percent of the total 1,497,330 votes cast.
The Gateway Pundit reminds us of the Kloppenburg declared victory, that was not. So much for that backlash against Wisconsen Governor Scott Walker.
