Wisconsin Senate Election 2010: Feingold (D) 46%, Johnson (R) 44%

The Wisconsin US  Senate race is still in play. Democrats should be worried. A Wisconsin Senate loss could provide the Republican party with the take over of the US Senate this November.

Who would have thought that after Republican Tommie Thompson dropped out of the race that the GOP would have a chance of still competing in Wisconsin and defeating incumbent Democrat Senator Russ Feingold?

However, in the latest Rasmussen poll, Democrat Feingold leads Republican challenger Ron Johnson by only 2%, 46% to 44%. As stated at the Weekly Standard, Feingold has not had a competitive race since 1998; however, it looks like Johnson is going to give him a run for his money. Or should we say the DNC’s money. Once again Democrats are going to have to funnel money to a state that they always considered a sure thing.

Businessman Ron Johnson, endorsed at last weekend’s state Republican Convention, is now running virtually even against incumbent Democrat Russ Feingold in Wisconsin’s race for the U.S. Senate.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Wisconsin shows Feingold with 46% support to Johnson’s 44%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) remain undecided.

The theme of his campaign, the genesis of which was an invitation to address a Tea Party rally, is: “First of all, freedom.” Then? “Then you’ve got to put meat on the bones.” He gets much of his meat from the Wall Street Journal’s opinion pages. And from a Wisconsin congressman, Paul Ryan, whose “road map” for entitlement reform Johnson praises. Health care? “Mitch Daniels has the solution.” Indiana’s Republican governor has offered state employees the choice of consumer-controlled health savings accounts, and 70 percent now choose them.

“The most basic right,” Johnson says, “is the right to keep your property.” Remembering the golden age when, thanks to Ronald Reagan, the top income tax rate was 28 percent, Johnson says: “For a brief moment we were 72 percent free.”

Just how vulnerable is Russ Feingold? He was trailing in the polls when Republican Tommie Thompson dropped out of the race. Now the incumbent Democrat is only up by 2 in WI. Hard to believe.

The Wisconsin governor’s race has Republican Scott Walker leading Democrat Tom Barrett 48% to 41%. Could the vote for the governor actually help the GOP for the US Senate election as well in the 2010 midterms.
