17 Year Old Nicholas Joy of Medford, MA Missing Since 3/3/13 at Sugarloaf Ski Mountain in Carrabassett Valley, Maine (Update: Found Safe)

Posted in: Found Safe,Missing Persons,Nicholas Joy

17 year old Nicholas Joy of Medford, Massachusetts has been missing since Sunday afternoon, March 3, 2013 when he failed to meet up with his father during a family ski outing at Sugarloaf mountain in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. The Sugarloaf ski patrol, game wardens and others searched in-bounds and out-of-bounds areas on skis, snowshoes and snowmobiles. Temperatures on Sunday night were relatively warm, dropping into the mid-20s with light snow falling. According to news accounts, Joy skied with his father, Robert, in the morning and was last seen near the Timberline chairlift that reaches the top of the mountain. Maine Warden Service said Joy and his father were on their last run of the day when he disappeared. They split up at the top of the mountain and were supposed to meet back up at their car. Nicholas Joy never showed and has not been seen or heard from since.

Nicholas Joy of Medford, Mass., was reported missing Sunday afternoon after failing to meet up with his father, Maine Warden Service spokesman Doug Rafferty said.

The Sugarloaf ski patrol, game wardens and others searched in-bounds and out-of-bounds areas on skis, snowshoes and snowmobiles late Sunday afternoon and into the night before the search was suspended at 1 a.m. Monday because of poor visibility.

The search resumed at first light and continued until dark, when the search was suspended until morning, said Rafferty. The Warden Service did not use a plane during the search because of windy conditions.

UPDATE I: Nicholas Joy found safe after missing for two days on Sugarloaf mountain in Maine.  The teen said that he survived after having watched survival shows on TV. Joy had kept himself warm by making a snow cave.

A teenage skier who got lost in weather so cold that his gloves froze survived the ordeal by building himself an igloo made of snow and pine needles and drinking from a near-by stream.

Nicholas Joy, 17, of Medford, Mass., was found at 9 a.m. today, three days after he disappeared from Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Maine on Sunday afternoon.

The teen was found on the Caribou Pond Road snowmobile trail, on the west side of the mountain, by Warwick, Mass., fire  captain Joseph Paul. Joy was about 4 miles from a road and 2 miles from Sugarloaf Mountain
