Obama Not-So Job Recovery: Inital Jobless Claims Rise Again, Jump 43,000 to 474,000

Once again we have poor jobs numbers from the Barack Obama job recovery economic plan. Initial jobless claims rose again for the week ending April 30 by 43,000 to a total of 474,000. The labor Department is claiming that the rise was unexpected due to unusual events. Really? If they knew there were unusual events, why didn’t they fact such things into their projection? Last week, the initial jobless claims were up as well pointing to an economic slow down. Economists had expected claims to fall to 410,000. Not even close. The number of people seeing unemployment benefits is the highest it has been in 8 months.

The number of claims for U.S. unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, pushed up by auto-plant shutdowns and other unusual events that seasonal variations failed to take into account, the Labor Department said.

Applications for jobless benefits jumped by 43,000 to 474,000 in the week ended April 30, the most since August, Labor Department figures showed today. A spring break holiday in New York, a new emergency benefits program in Oregon and auto shutdowns caused by the disaster in Japan were the main reasons for the surge, a Labor Department spokesman said as the data was released to the press.

States reported 3,447,542 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending April 16, a decrease of 718 from the prior week. There were 5,349,618 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 16 were in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (4.8), Oregon (4.4), Pennsylvania (4.2), California (4.1), Wisconsin (4.1), Rhode Island (3.9), Idaho (3.9), New Jersey (3.9), Nevada (3.8), and Montana (3.8).

Is it any wonder why Obama is heading off to Ground Zero in NYC to do a photo op as a diversion from the economy? However, as stated at Stop the Leftist Propaganda Machine, the MSM already had excuses at the ready for Obama’s poor efforts of job recovery.  The Japan earthquake, Spring Break and the fact that the month of April begins with an “A” were cited as reason for the poor first time unemployment numbers.
