Vote Hauling – Whats happenning in your state?

Doug Petch has an interest post on Kentucky’s attempts to deal with political parties driving people to the polls. The opportunity for corruption and fraud is very high. This issue is important in most major urban areas of the country, and as we saw in Milwaukee this year, has the opportunity for significant fraud.

Doug quotes Kentucky’s Secretary of State, Trey Grayson:

I have a different proposal, one that addresses the problem while still allowing campaigns to use paid drivers in a legal and honest manner. This proposal comes from a conversation with former assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Self. Based on his many years investigating vote-buying in Kentucky, Self says we can address the problem by creating a system for tracking vote haulers.

Campaigns should be required to keep a list of drivers and of voters who were driven to the polls. Such a paper trail would serve as a deterrent to vote buyers and would provide an audit trail for potential investigations. It would also subject the haulers and campaigns to perjury charges if they falsified paperwork.

What is happening in your state and what would you like to see happen going forward? I think that Kentucky is doing a great job addressing this problem. I live in Georgia and vote hauling is not even on the radar screen.
