The ‘Smoozer” in Chief: Please tell me that you did not think that Barack Obama was being sincere with all this outreach and charm offensive?
According to Obama aides, President Barack Obama’s recent charm offensive with Congressional Republicans is nothing more than a joke. Wow, with former and current aids like this, Obama must be asking who needs the GOP? The thought of Obama ‘s ”Charm Offensive” is being mocked by his own advisers makes one really want to be a fly on the wall in the White House at the next staff meeting. However, does it really come as a surprise to many, that the dinners, the lunches, all the recent “reaching out” were all for show? Really? Did Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Pat Toomey, Bob Corker, Kelly Ayotte and Ron Johnson actually think Obama was sincere? No wonder the GOP lost the last election to the worst president in modern time.
Ok, who let the truth out to my nefarious plans?
He is dining with Republicans after advisers openly mocked suggestions that he do so. He is visiting Capitol Hill after telling aides that such a gesture was beneath him and the dignity of his office. And, as an ultimate indignity, he is talking to reporters. What’s gotten into President Obama?
A better question might be what has left the president – and the answer would be: Much of his political capital.
Obama’s sudden burst of public outreach coincides with a drop in his approval ratings, noted first by Democratic pollsters advising the White House last week and now surfacing in a spate of public polls. This raises the uncomfortable question: Is this schmooze-a-thon a legitimate act of humility and leadership or a cynical public display?
I can’t answer that question because I don’t pretend to know Obama’s state of mind. I can tell you that some of his advisers are no more convinced that this strategy will work than they were a few days ago.
“This is a joke. We’re wasting the president’s time and ours,” complained a senior White House official who was promised anonymity so he could speak frankly. “I hope you all (in the media) are happy because we’re doing it for you.”
Another said the president was sincerely trying to find common ground with stubborn Republicans. “But if we do it,” the aide hastened, “it won’t be because we had steaks and Merlot with a few senators.”
As stated by Sister Toldja, ”Obama’s sudden charm offensive probably more due to his tanking poll numbers than with any real desire to reach a compromise solution to our nation’s fiscal mess”. According to a new McClatchy-Marist poll, any political capital he had following the election is gone. This is all about Obama massaging his poll numbers so that he and the Democrats have a reasonable chance of taking the House and keeping the Senate in 2014. If that occurs, America is sunk forever as a nation we once knew and Obama knows it.
His approval rating has dropped to the lowest level in more than a year, with more voters now turning thumbs down on his performance than thumbs up, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll. The measure of how much people like him also has dropped.
He’s still vastly more popular than Congress, particularly congressional Republicans. But in the biggest political clash of the year – over the federal budget and how to curb deficits – voters split 44 percent to 42 percent between preferring Congress or Obama.
Once again we are witness to a president who is more concerned about politics and elections rather than leading and fixing the United States problems. When will Americans and namely the GOP ever get it through their heads that Obama cares less about fixing the economy, lowering the national debt or creating jobs? Obama is looking to create a socialized, government dependent Western European failed society. This is his goal, not fixing our problems. Why would anyone think that some one who is mainly the cause of the problems would want to fix them?
More from Rush Limbaugh on Obama’s faux charm offensive. (full transcript)
RUSH: Now, I could give you all the names there, but it doesn’t matter. Not one of those were repeated. Now, I didn’t know that any such thing was going on. So I said, “What is this?” And I learned, I read a piece by Ron Fournier, the National Journal, by the way, the charm offensive isn’t working, bottom line. But the charm offensive was Obama inviting Republican establishment types out to dinner. The night that Rand Paul was doing his filibuster, Obama took, who was it, McCain and Lindsey Graham and Bob Corker and Tom Coburn, a bunch of Republicans to dinner in that 20-car motorcade for a half mile trip, and that was Obama’s charm offensive.
And, by the way, there are some White House staffers who were not happy about this. They don’t like the charm offensive. They’re being forced to do this. They think that this whole thing’s being drummed up — get this — for media approval. Now, why would this be taking place? It appears, ladies and gentlemen, that Obama’s in some kind of trouble. Either in the polls or in the arena of public perception. There is a polling story out from yesterday. McClatchy-Marist has a poll and the headline of their story here says “Obama Tumbling in Voters’ Eyes.”
