Al Gore’s Live Earth Concert … Tuned out by Most Americans … Others Did as Well

The over-media hyped Live Earth Concerts to save the globe were tuned out by most, skeptical of the concerts motives. You know your music cause event is doomed when it does not get the stamp of approval by Bob Geldof.

Musicians including Bob Geldof, Roger Daltrey and the Pet Shop Boys pointed out that a concert highlighting climate change had itself generated huge carbon emissions.

It would appear that Al Gore best stick to documentaries as opposed to Live events. As The Blue Crab Boulevard stated, they were “Bored by Gore”.

The Live Earth concert promoted by former Vice President Al Gore received plenty of media coverage and hype, but most Americans tuned out. Just 22% said they followed news stories about the concert Somewhat or Very Closely. Seventy-five percent (75%) did not follow coverage of the event. (Rasmussen Report)

Al Gore seemingly has misread the tea leaves an bit off more than he could chew. One thing is for certain, Al Gore did prove a couple of points with the Live Earth concerts. One, there are many who have an opposing view to his and two, many of those who claim to support the global warming cause are hypocrites at best.

Skepticism about the participants may have been a factor in creating this low level of interest. Most Americans (52%) believe the performers take part in such events because it is good for their image. Only 24% say the celebrities really believe in the cause while another 24% are not sure. One rock star who apparently shared that view is Matt Bellamy of the band Muse. Earlier in the week, he jokingly referred to Live Earth as “private jets for climate change.”

According to the UK’s Daily Mail, Live Earth branded a foul-mouthed flop. The poor attendance turnout was blamed on everything from good weather in England to cold weather in Johannesburg. Yes, thats correct. A concert for global warming where fan turn out is lowered by cold weather.

Organisers of the global music concert – punctuated by swearing from presenters and performers – had predicted massive viewing figures.

But BBC’s live afternoon television coverage attracted an average British audience of just 900,000.

In the evening, when coverage switched from BBC2 to BBC1, the figure rose to just 2.7million.

Two years ago, Live 8 drew a peak television audience of 9.6million while Live Aid notched 10million in 1985. (Daily Mail – UK)

NBC’s three-hour Live Earth primetime special, which included highlights from Saturday’s global concerts, failed to generate much enthusiasm in the ratings.

The estimated 2.7 million viewers were slightly less than the 3 million NBC would average on a normal Saturday night in the summer with repeats on what already is the least-popular night of television.
