Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy’s son James Dungy, 18, was found dead
Posted in: Deceased
In less than a week Indianapolis Colt’s head coach Tony Dungy went from going for a perfect season in football to a horrific one beyond imagination. Tony Dungy’s son James was found dead in an apartment near Tampa Thursday morning.
Police said there were no signs of foul play, but did not confirm if the cause of death was suicide. A spokeswoman in the local sheriff’s office said a cause of death won’t be announced until after an autopsy.
Police said Dungy’s girlfriend called them at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Dungy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to initial ESPN reports it appears that it was an apparent suicide; however, an autopsy on Friday will determine the exact cause of death.
“Based on evidence at the scene, indications are that this death appears to be a suicide,” Sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. “There is no evidence to contradict that at this time.” Police said there was no note found.
The medical examiner’s office has told ESPN that the exact cause of death will be determined by an autopsy, scheduled for Friday morning.
Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning summed it up the best when he said,
“It certainly keeps things in perspective,” two-time MVP quarterback Peyton Manning said. “Players with families, it certainly hits home. Coach Dungy’s close to a lot of these players. … Players feel close to him as well as his family.”
