Moldova’s Version of “The Terminal”

The former Moldovan Defense Minister, Valeriu Pasat, was detained Friday and arrested on suspicions of defrauding the government of $10 million.
Pasat was to be held for three days on suspicion that he pocketed $10 million of the state’s money in the sale of 21 MiG-29 fighter jets to the United States in 1997, according to a statement from Valeriu Gorbulea, the deputy prosecutor.
State news agency Moldpres reported that Pasat had arrived in the Moldovan capital to take part in a meeting of the pro-Moscow opposition, the Democratic Moldova Bloc.
The relationship between former Soviet republic Moldova and Russia have become more tense recently as Moldovan elections last week provided pro-Western communists 56 seats in the 101-seat parliament.
In Moldova President Voronin, the incumbent, has chosen coolness toward Russia as the way to stay in power. This new trend has worried Moscow in providing the continuing opposition of former Soviet satellites
We applaud Moldova for choosing a pro-Western government we hope in the future they also vote for “democracy and the rule of law.”
