20 Dead as Gunman Attack Nairobi Shopping Mall in Kenya (Update: Attackers were Targeting non-Muslims) (Update: Authorities Calling Possible Terror Attack) (Update: 59 Dead, Likely to Rise, Islamists Have Hostages)

CNN is reporting that dozens are injured and at least 20 are dead as gunman opened fire in a Nairobi mall in Kenya. The attack took place at an upscale Westgate Mall. In is unknown at this time just how many people have been injured or killed and the background of the gunman. A witness said that gunmen armed with AK-47s and grenades.

Gunmen attacked an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital on Saturday, leading to a fierce gunbattle with police and leaving dozens of casualties.

The Kenyan Red Cross reported 20 dead, though a government official, Joseph Ole Lenku, only confirmed 11.

Fifty more people were wounded in the attack at the mall in Nairobi, said Abbas Gullet, head of the Kenyan Red Cross.

A security agent told CNN’s Lillian Leposo at the scene that the violence was a terrorist attack, but officials had yet to confirm that information, Leposo told CNN.

“They have strong reason that these men are terrorists,” Leposo said.

UPDATE I: From AP via the Jawa Report … it would appear that CNN left out this little important fact that the gunman were solely attacking non-Muslims. So they were only attacking non-Muslims, eh? Let’s go out on a limb and call this an act of terror and not workplace violence.

The gunmen announced that non-Muslims would be targeted, said Elijah Kamau, who was at the mall at the time of the midday attack.

“The gunmen told Muslims to stand up and leave. They were safe, and non-Muslims would be targeted,” he said.

UPDATE II: ABC News is reporting that 22 are dead and the attackers were targeting non-Muslims. The authorities are treating it as a terrorist attack.

Gunmen threw grenades and opened fire Saturday killing at least 22 people in an attack targeting non-Muslims at an upscale mall in Kenya’s capital that was hosting a children’s day event, a Red Cross official and witnesses said.

The attackers remained inside and firing subsided as military surrounded the mall hours after the attack. People continued to trickle out from hiding places within the Westgate mall, which is frequented by expatriates and rich Kenyans in Nairobi’s affluent Westlands neighborhood.

Kenya Red Cross official Abbas Gullet said at least 22 people were killed in the attack that police blamed on terrorists. He said the death toll would likely rise.

“We are treating this as a terrorist attack,” said police chief Benson Kibue, adding that there are likely no more than 10 attackers involved.

UPDATE III: The BBC is reporting that police first thought it was a robbery; however, is now classifying it as terrorism.

A senior police officer originally said it was an attempted robbery but later called it a possible terrorist attack.

The Somali militant group al-Shabab had threatened to strike the centre.

It is opposed to Kenya sending troops to fight in Somalia. No group has said it carried out Saturday’s attack.

UPDATE IV: Islamist gunmen holed up with hostages in Nairobi siege, 59 dead.

Islamist militants were holed up with hostages on Sunday at a shopping mall in Nairobi, where at least 59 people have been killed in an attack by the al Shabaab group that opposes Kenya’s participation in a peacekeeping mission in neighboring Somalia.

Washington Navy Yard Gunman Aaron Alexis was Treated for Serious Mental Health Issues … He Had Been Hearing Voices in his Head

How many red flags were needed to have the Washington Navy Yard gunman’s security clearance taken away?

Now the AP is reporting that Aaron Alexis was being treated for serious mental illness. The man who would yesterday murder 12 individuals and wounded countless others was hearing voices in his head. All this and still no one thought that this guy was a risk to himself and others. Because some how being previously arrested for shooting a bullet into your neighbors home is not grounds to not get a security clearance when employed with a government contractor.

The more reports that come out about Aaron Alexis, the more we learn that yesterday’s massacre could have been completely avoided.

Aaron Alexis

U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.

Aaron Alexis, 34, had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for his mental problems …

Seriously, how did this guy have any clearance what so ever? The NSA can tape everything we do but some how a guy like this slips through the cracks?

James Holmes, the Colorado Movie Massacre Suspect Learns Today if He Faces Death Penalty

To go after the death penalty or not go after the death penalty, that is the question …

James Holmes, the gunman suspected of killing 12 people in the Colorado movie massacre will learn later today whether he will face the death penalty and execution for his crimes. Holmes’ defense attorneys had offered to plead guilty for meticulously planning and brutally executing a plan to attack a Colorado movie theater at midnight during a showing of the latest Batman movie. This pea deal would allow Holmes to live out his days in prison with no chance of parole instead of having him put to death. My person opinion is go for the death penalty … good riddance to bad rubbish.. It would be a terrible message to send out that one could go in a movie theatre, kill 12 people and wound several others and then live your life out in prison on the tax payers dime.

A decision on death or not? Heck, if it were up to me the only thought process would be to either bring back “Sparky” or see if I could not get a one time public stoning exemption for his crimes.

VIDEO – decision expected today.

After a week of legal twists and turns, James Holmes will find out Monday if he could face execution if convicted in the Colorado theater attack that killed 12 people.

Behind-the-scenes maneuvering erupted into a public quarrel between prosecutors and the defense over Holmes’ public offer to plead guilty, but the two sides could still come to an agreement that would spare Holmes’s life in exchange for spending the rest of his life in prison.

Newtown, CT Shooter Adam Lanza Researched Mass Murderers Prior to Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre

In the end, are mass murders as simple as one sick, mentally deranged individual trying to out do the previous one?

As reported at the Hartford Courant, Adam Lanza, the individual responsible for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, CT that left 26 dead, conducted research on several mass murders. There has been previous news accounts that investigators had found news articles about Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik at Lanza’s Newtown home. Now sources are saying that the investigators also found articles and other documents related to other mass murders in one of two bedrooms he used in the house that he shared with his mother, Nancy. Lanza shot and killed his mother first in the home before he went to the elementary school and went on a mass murder spree.

Another reason to monitor your crazy children … Adam Lanza researched mass murders, prior to his own

As we have stated in the past, no gun ban that Dianne Feinstein, Democrats and Barack Obama can dream up to punish law abiding Second Amendment Americans is going to prevent a mass murder where we have severely deranged individuals who are hell-bent on outdoing the previous deranged mass murderer. These crazoids are trying to outdo each other. This is about crazy, not guns.

Before carrying out the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Adam Lanza conducted research on several mass murders, sources close to the investigation into the shooting have told The Courant.

The Courant had previously reported that investigators found news articles about Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik at Lanza’s Newtown home. Sources now say that investigators found articles and other documents related to other mass murders in one of two bedrooms he used in the house that he shared with his mother, Nancy.

Lanza killed 26 people, including 20 first-graders, on the morning of Dec. 14 before taking his own life as police closed in. Lanza had first shot and killed his mother at their house.

State police gave the victims’ families, Sandy Hook teachers and first-responders an update on the investigation last week in which, sources said, they discussed the theory that Lanza was trying to outdo other killers.

From The LA Times:

The Stamford Advocate, citing an unnamed source, said officials found documents on “virtually every mass murder” in the United States and elsewhere after searching the Lanza home.

The source said they found “a lot of material” in particular on Charles Carl Roberts IV, who attacked an Amish schoolhouse in 2006, killing five girls.

The Associated Press also reported that literature on other mass shootings was found at his house.

South Dakota First State in US to Allow Teachers to Carry Guns in School to Protect Children

Finally, a law that actually allows for the protection of school children … Reading, Writing and Revolvers.

South Dakota has become the first state in the Nation to enact a law explicitly authorizing school employees to carry guns on the job. The bill was signed into law on Friday by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. The law is in response to the call to arms to protect school children following the Newtown, CT Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting that left 20 dead. What better way to protect innocent children from the Adam Lanza’s of the world than taking away ”gun free zones”. As the Right Wing News opines, such places are considered easy pickings by those crazoids who are hell bent on mass murder and taking out as many as possible before they take their own life.  This law specifically authorizes teachers to possess a firearm in a K-12 school. Protecting children in schools is not about taking law-abiding citizens Second Amendment rights away, it’s about a show of force against those that would cause harm to innocents. Why would a crazed killer attack a school, a movie theater or a mall, because they are gun free zones. Create a barrier or perception that they are not gun free and a cowardly killer would think twice. That, or they will be gunned down before too much damage is done.

South Dakota became the first state in the nation to enact a law explicitly authorizing school employees to carry guns on the job, under a measure signed into law on Friday by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. Several other states already have provisions in their laws — or no legal restrictions — that make it possible for teachers to possess guns in the classroom. In fact, a handful of school districts nationwide do have teachers who carry firearms. But South Dakota is the only known state with a statute that specifically authorizes teachers to possess a firearm in a K-12 school, according to Lauren Heintz, a research analyst at the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Representative Scott Craig, a freshman Republican in the South Dakota House who sponsored the bill, said he hoped the measure would shift the country’s discourse on school safety.

“Given the national attention to safety in schools, specifically in response to tragedies like in Connecticut, this is huge,” he said. He added that, hopefully, “dominoes will start to fall, people will see it’s reasonable, it’s safer than they think, it’s proactive and it’s preventive.”

So Punks, do ya feel lucky trying to target a school in South Dakota?

15 Year Old Nehemiah Griego Accused of Murdering Family in New Mexico Planned to Keep Killing at Local Walmart, Arrested for Murder

Believe it or not, this could have been worse …

Nehemiah Griego, the 15 year old boy who is accused of fatally shooting his mother, father, two sisters and a brother in Albuquerque, New Mexico was reportedly not going to stop at that but had plans to keep killing and go to a local Wal-Mart to continue his murderous ways. According to the Daily News, after killing 5 members of his family, Nehemiah Griego told a friend that he was going to continue his killing spree by going to a local Wal-Mart. Griego  loaded up his family van with “several” guns that he intended to use to slaughter customers at the nearby shopping center. Thankfully his friend talked him out of it and he eventually told a church security guard about the crime, and the retired cop called 911. Nehemiah Griego  was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and three counts of “child abuse resulting in death”.

The motive for the horrific slayings were still unclear, but it is being reported that the home-schooled 15 year old teen had had a “minor disagreement” with his mom Sarah Griego Friday night. This is what causes a kid to kill 5 of his own family members, a disagreement? What have we raised for children when they cannot cope with the word “NO”? Once again we are witness, similar to the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings in Newtown, CT of a kid using his parent’s guns to kill them. According to reports the guns were not kept in a gun safe or locked away, but instead in a closet.

The New Mexico teen accused of gunning down his younger siblings, his mom and his pastor father reportedly planned on continuing his killing spree at a local Walmart.

Nehemiah Griego, 15, had loaded up his family van with “several” guns that he intended to use to slaughter customers at the nearby shopping center, the Albuquerque Journal reported Monday.

Griego hoped to die in a shootout with cops, sources told the paper.

But he was talked out of the plan by a friend, who convinced him over the phone to meet him at his father’s church, the paper said.

He eventually told a church security guard about the crime, and the retired cop called 911, the report said.

The motive for the horrific slayings were still unclear, but the paper said the home-schooled teen had had a “minor disagreement” with his mom Sarah Griego Friday night.

The names and ages of those killed:

Greg Griego, 51
Sarah Griego, 40
Zephania Griego, 9
Jael Griego, 5
Angelina Griego, 2

A time line of accounts of the murders of the five family members:

At around 1 a.m., the gun-toting goon crept into his mom’s room and shot her, the report said.

The shooting woke up Griego’s 9-year-old brother Zephania, who’d been in bed with the mom. Griego told the boy what he’d just done — and then shot him “multiple times,” the report said.

The sounds of violence roused Griego’s 2- and 5-year-old sisters, Angelina and Jael, who started screaming before their big brother killed them, too.

Griego then laid in wait for his father, pastor Greg Griego, and gunned him down when he walked in around 6 a.m., the report said.

Two Adults and Three Children Shot Dead in Albuquerque, NM … 15 Year Old Male Has been Arrested and Charged with the Murders (UPDATE: Suspect Named: Nehemiah Griego)

Two adults and three children were fatally shot in an Albuquerque, New Mexico home Saturday night. The identities of the victims have yet to be released; however, a man, woman and three children, two girls and one boy,  were found dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. According to reports, a 15 year old male suspect has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder and three counts of “child abuse resulting in death”. Um, child abuse resulting in death? In New Mexico a death can result in any of the following charges: Murder, Intentional Child Abuse Resulting in Death, Negligent Child Abuse Resulting in Death, Second Degree Murder, Voluntary Manslaughter, Vehicular Homicide, and Involuntary Manslaughter. Police are trying to determine the suspects motive and connection to the five victims. Investigators are trying to determine whether the victims were related, and who owned several guns that were found at the home.

Police said in a statement they had found the bodies of an adult male, an adult female, two girls and a boy – all dead from multiple gunshot wounds – when they arrived at an Albuquerque home late on Saturday.

The statement said a “male juvenile” was in custody and charged with two counts of murder and three counts of “child abuse resulting in death”.

Local media reported that the suspect was 15 years old.

His motive and connection to the five victims are not immediately known, according to a spokesman for Bernalillo County sheriff.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the victims were related, and who owned several guns that were found at the home.

Several guns were found inside the home, including one assault-style rifle; however, it is still being investigated what weapons were used in the murders. All victims were killed by multiple gun shot wounds.

Aaron Williamson, a spokesman for the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, said “multiple” weapons were found at the scene, including a “military-type assault rifle,” adding that the investigation was still under way.

Local networks KOB Four and KOAT Seven said police were investigating whether an assault rifle was used in the killing of a man, a woman, two girls and a boy on Saturday night local time.

UPDATE I: Neighbors identified the two adults and three children killed Saturday night as the Griego family, who they described as active in the church as well as the South Valley neighborhood.

Griego and his wife, Sarah, have 10 kids, according to the pastor’s biography on the Calvary Church website, which has been removed. The other children’s ages were not given in the biography.

The suspect, Nehemiah Griego, 15, was not well known among those living within a block or so of the family’s home on Long Lane in the South Valley.

However, neighbor Peter Gomez said he saw the boy walk with siblings and his parents through the neighborhood regularly, and he “wore nothing but camouflage stuff”.

A male juvenile is in custody this morning following a shooting in the South Valley that left five people dead. Police identified the teen as  Nehemiah Griego, 15, Sunday at about 1:15 p.m.  Officials have not yet released the names of the dead.

NBC News/WSJ Poll: National Rifle Association (NRA) More Popular than the Entertainment Industry.

A new NBC News/WSJ poll shows that the NRA is far more popular than the entertainment industry.  In the wake of the  Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in Newtown, CT the poll finds that 41% of Americans see the NRA in a positive light, while only 34% view it in a negative light. However, only 24% have positive feelings about the entertainment industry, and 39%  have negative ones. A rather interesting comparison when one looks at President Barack Obama’s recent 23 executive orders on gun control, yet there were no references to anything to deal with curbing the violence spread by the entertainment industry with violence in TV, movies or print. But of course Obama has a chummy relationship with the entertainment industry and has given them a pass.

As Washington prepares for a political battle over the Obama White House’s proposals to curb gun violence after the Newtown, Conn., shootings, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that the National Rifle Association is more popular than the entertainment industry.

Forty-one percent of adults see the NRA — the nation’s top gun lobby — in a positive light, while 34 percent view it in a negative light.

By comparison, just 24 percent have positive feelings about the entertainment industry, and 39 percent have negative ones.

The NRA’s fav/unfav score is virtually unchanged from its 41 percent-to-29 percent rating in the Jan. 2011 NBC/WSJ poll, nearly two years before the Newtown shootings.
