Robert Durst has been arrested in New Orleans, Louisiana on an extradition warrant out if Los Angeles, California for the 2000 murder if Susan Berman. Durst was arrested on Canal Street by FBI agents just before 11:00pm Saturday at a J.W. Marriott hotel in New Orleans.  The 71 year old Robert Durst was never charged in connection with the unsolved 2000 murder of Berman in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. Berman was killed as New York authorities prepared to question her in the 1982 disappearance of Durst’s wife, Kathie. Robert Durst has recently been the subject of the HBO true-crime series “The Jinx” about his suspected involvement in three murders. Durst was also tried for the fall 2001 murder of neighbor Morris Black, who was found dismembered in a Galveston, Texas, bay. He was acquitted in 2003 via a self-defense claim.

Durst was arrested by FBI agents just before 11:00pm Saturday at a J.W. Marriott hotel in New Orleans on a Los Angeles warrant for the murder of Susan Berman 15 years ago, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. FBI agents say Durst had registered under an alias and paid for the room in cash. Fake documents were found in his possession. The FBI believed he would flee, possibly to Cuba.

Berman’s body was discovered in her West Los Angeles home on Christmas Eve 2000. Since that time the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division has conducted an investigation into Ms. Berman’s death.

“We are relieved and also grateful to everyone who assisted in the arrest of Robert Durst,” Durst’s brother Douglas said in a statement to ABC News. “We hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done.”

Durst, 71, has never been charged in connection with the unsolved 2000 murder of Berman in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles, who was killed as New York authorities prepared to question her in the 1982 disappearance of his wife, Kathie. As a result of investigative leads and additional evidence that has come to light in the past year, investigators have identified Robert Durst as the person responsible for Ms. Berman’s death.

Following the arrest of Robert Durst, his brother, Douglas Durst, who now runs the family real-estate empire, released a statement Sunday afternoon saying: “We are relieved and also grateful to everyone who assisted in the arrest of Robert Durst. We hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done.”

New York Times – On HBO’s ‘The Jinx,’ Robert Durst Says He ‘Killed Them All’.

On Sunday night, in the final moments of the final episode of a six-part HBO documentary about him, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst,” Mr. Durst seemed to veer toward a confession that could lift the shroud of mystery that surrounds the deaths of three people over the course of three decades.

“What the hell did I do?” Mr. Durst whispers to himself in an unguarded moment caught on a microphone he wore during filming. “Killed them all, of course.”

In the years since his wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared in 1982 after spending the weekend at the couple’s country home in Westchester County, Mr. Durst has bounced in and out of jail for other crimes, cut ties with his family, remarried, and sued his brother for a $65 million share of the family fortune. Through it all, he has maintained his innocence in the disappearance of his wife, while also denying any role in the 2000 death of the Los Angeles friend, Susan Berman.

UPDATE I: Does this letter implicate Robert Durst in neighbor’s murder? Handwriting and misspelling on anonymous note about body VERY similar to letter billionaire sent to friend.

The note read ‘BEVERLEY HILLS POLICE – 1527 BENEDICT CANYON CADAVER’ – it has distinctive block capital lettering and the word Beverly Hills is misspelled.

A note written by Robert Durst, scion of one of New York’s largest real estate empires, may hold the key to the murder of his neighbor.

Durst, a billionaire, was questioned but not charged in the mysterious death of his first wife Kathleen McCormack in 1982.

The 71-year-old was then questioned in 2000 after the death of his longtime friend and elderly neighbor Susan Berman, shortly before she was to be questioned if she knew about Kathleen’s disappearance.
