Obama’s Chief of Staff Jack Lew Lied on CNN in Misleading Comments about Blaming Republicans fior the Democrat Controlled Senate’s Failure to Pass a Budget Resolution

YOU LIE!!!  Now you know what Barack Obama’s strategy will be for reelection … he and his minions are going to lie through their teeth.

Obama and the MSM, perfect together. White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew, stated on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Feb. 12. 2012 that the GOP Senate was to blame for no budget being passed in the Senate and it would never get 60 votes. One would think that  Jack Lew who was the recent budget director for President Obama and also the budget director for former President Bill Clinton would be an expert on the budget and rules. So with all that experience one can only surmise that he flat out lied and tried to mislead the American people on CNN …

But we also need to be honest. You can’t pass a budget in the Senate of the United States without 60 votes and you can’t get 60 votes without bipartisan support. So unless Republicans are willing to work with Democrats in the Senate, Harry Reid is not going to be able to get a budget passed. And I think he was reflecting the reality of that that could be a challenge.”

There is just one problem with Jack Lew’s comments. They are 100% false.60 votes are not needed in a budget reconciliation. They actually only require 51 votes or a simple majority. However, the WH did not dispute Lew’s misrepresentations but instead stated that he was only referencing the gridlock. REALLY? Last time I checked the Democrats held the Senate. You mean that Obama and Reid can’t get 51 votes in a Democrat controlled US Senate? Maybe Obama needs to look at his own party first when it comes to obstruction.

But the congressional budget resolution can be important because of a process known as reconciliation. If language is included in the budget resolution that directs a Congressional committee to meet certain spending or tax targets, then the resulting bill cannot be subject to filibuster (ie, needing 60 votes to end debate) and can pass with only a majority vote. (For more information on the budget process, see this excellent primer by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.)
