Maine Gay Rights Bill Not a Gateway To Gay Marriage, Ay-yah

Posted in: Main

According to AP, State lawmakers gave final approval Wednesday night to a bill to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination. It was expected to be signed Thursday by Gov. John Baldacci.

The bill would amend the Maine Human Rights Act by making it illegal to discriminate in employment, housing, credit, public accommodations and education based on sexual orientation or gender identity

You may want to take note of this passage and the time and date that these comments were made as I guarantee you this bill will be used as a stepping stone to attempt to pass gay marriage in the State of Maine.

The measure gained ground Wednesday with agreement to an amendment addressing concerns the law would be a gateway to gay marriages.

The amendment says the law “may not be construed to create, add, alter or abolish any right to marry that may exist” under state or federal law.

Like this type of language has stopped activists in any other state or State Courts to deem such language unconstitutional. For anyone who thinks that this is not “foot in the door” politics I have some fresh water lobstahs to sell ya too.
