Pennsylvania Senate Election 2010: Toomey (R) Leads Sestak (D) by 6 in Rasmussen & by 10 in Reuters Poll

The Keystone state is looking good for the GOP.

Republican Pat Toomey has a 10% point lead over Democrat candidate Joe Sestak in the most recent Reuters poll. With a little more than two months to go before the 2010 midterm elections, Toomey has a 47% to 37% lead over Sestak. Pennsylvania will be a “key” state for the GOP in winning back control of the US Senate. Toomey’s lead is smaller for registered voters; however, in a political environment where Republicans far out gain Democrats in “voter enthusiasm”, one has to look at a likely voter, not just who is registered.

Toomey, a conservative former congressman, leads Sestak, a retired admiral elected to Congress in 2006, by 47 percent to 37 percent barely two months before the November 2 election to replace Democrat Arlen Specter.

Toomey’s lead was smaller, 40 percent to 37 percent, among a larger pool of registered voters.

Sestak’s troubles are another election warning sign for Democrats, who face potentially big losses in the Senate and possible loss of their House of Representatives majority.

Pennsylvania’s high-profile Senate race is one of more than a dozen contests that could determine whether Republicans gain the 10 seats they need to regain control of the Senate and slam the brakes on President Barack Obama’s legislative agenda.

Pennsylvania voters are not happy with Democrats, why would any one believe that would lead to them getting elected in 2010? With all this polling data at hand Red Dog Report asks whether Sestak is wondering, Is That Job With the White House Still Available?

Voters in Pennsylvania, a traditional political battleground state won by Obama in 2008, said they were pessimistic about the state’s direction and unhappy with Democratic Governor Ed Rendell’s job performance.

“This is a state that is not thrilled with the way Democrats have been performing. Republicans clearly have momentum,” said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

Another factor in the US Senate race weighing against Democrat Sestak is the Pennsylvania governors race where Republican Tom Corbett has a sizable 10% point lead over Democrat Dan Onorato. The momentum and enthusiasm is on the side of the GOP in the Keystone state.

Also Rasmussen has Toomey up over Sestak 45% to 39% with a huge lead among independents.

Toomey is favored by 77% of Republicans, while 68% of Democrats support Sestak. Among voters not affiliated with either political party, Toomey leads Sestak by a 42% to 27% margin.

Forty-two percent (42%) of voters in the state approve of the job Barack Obama is doing as president, while 58% disapprove.
