“A Child is Missing” Saves Children and the Elderly

Posted in: Child Welfare,Missing Persons,Search and Recovery

When trying to find a missing person, one of the most important things that can be done is get the word out quickly. A company, A Child is Missing, has come out with software that they are giving to law enforcement around the country to contact those in an area that someone is missing and provide the important information on it.

It uses a computer database to send recorded messages to thousands of households and businesses in the area where someone, typically a child, has been reported missing. The recorded message, which describes the missing person, reaches up to 1,000 people a minute.

Since it began in 1997, A Child Is Missing has received more than 10,000 calls for assistance, placed nearly 11 million alert calls, resulting in 123 recoveries. More than 50 police officers from around the state gathered at Ansonia High School for a seminar on the program.

It could also be used for alerts about criminals on the loose, said Chief Kevin Hale, who hosted the event.

One of the great things about the system is that it does not require the local police to learn a new skill. If a child goes missing, the police call the toll free number for ACIM and then gets the important information. They then search their databases for sexual predators in the area to alert the police. After this they put out a message that is sent to all of the people living in the immediate area so that the neighbors are aware of the situation and can report anything important as soon as possible.

Too often technology is used to cause trouble in this world. The folks at A Child is Missing have created a very simple and logical system that can help many families in a time of great fear and stress.
