US Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) Says “It Would Be Un-American for Him to Resign”

Democrats sure have a strange definition of Patriotism.

Democrats have always said not to question their Patriotism. Charlie Rangel, the former Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee says that itwould be un-American for him to resign. I guess Rangel does not think it’s un-American for a US House of Representatives member to be corrupt and facing multiple ethics violations. However, it is not Republicans that are calling for Rangel’s resignation, it is Democrats that are calling for his resignation.

Embattled Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) said Saturday it would be un-American of him to resign in the face of a looming ethics trial.

The Hill first reported Friday night that Rep. Betty Sutton (D-Ohio) had called on Rangel to step down, the first sitting House Democrat to do so.

The New York Daily News reported Saturday that Rangel, speaking to reporters at Harlem Hospital, brushed off the call to give up his seat.

“Well, it wouldn’t be the American thing to do,” he said. “I think I owe it to the process to find out first what the investigative committee finds out.”

“…I really never heard of that concept that if someone accuses you of something, why don’t you just step aside so you don’t embarrass anybody and admit to something that you don’t believe is true.”

No worries, let Charlie Rangel continue his presumption of innocence and face the ethics hearings right before the 2010 midterm elections. However,Democrats are asking for Rangel to resign. Sure, it has nothing to do with Rangel being a Democrat and the ethics hearings being held right before the midterm elections where Democrats are already facing the possibility of losing numerous House seats and possible control.

In a statement to The Hill, Sutton stated, “It is regrettable, but Charlie Rangel needs to resign from his seat in Congress. This isn’t about being a Democrat or Republican, this is about preserving the public trust
