Blanche Lincoln Wins Democrat Primary Runoff Against Bill Halter … Big Loser, Labor Unions

Posted in: 2010 Elections,Politics,Senate Elections

Democrat incumbent Blanche Lincoln won her parties nomination in the runoff primary against challenger Bill Halter.

Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln won renomination tonight, beating Lt. Gov. Bill Halter — and the national labor unions that had spent millions on his behalf — in a remarkable result that provided a counter-weight to the anti-incumbent trend nationally.

“This election is not about special interests, this election is not about me, this election is about us,” Lincoln said in her victory speech.

The surprising Blanche Lincoln win has its winners and losers. Winners … former President Bill Clinton who campaigned for Lincoln and shows that he still has the star power in Arkansas. Losers … that would beand the labor unions who spent millions of dollars on a Democrat primary battle, only to lose in the end. Add  MoveOn.org  to the list of losers.  As reported by a White House official at the Politico, labor unions just “flushed $10 million down the toilet.”

A senior White House official just called me with a very pointed message for the administration’s sometime allies in organized labor, who invested heavily in beating Blanche Lincoln, Obama’s candidate, in Arkansas.

“Organized labor just flushed $10 million of their members’ money down the toilet on a pointless exercise,” the official said. “If even half that total had been well-targeted and applied in key House races across this country, that could have made a real difference in November.”

Lincoln relied heavily both on Obama’s endorsement, which she advertised relentlessly on radio and in the mail, and on the backing of former President Bill Clinton, who backed her to the hilt.

As the Weekly Standard writes, labor unions take another big political hit.

But it’s more than just the money. It’s a rejection of the ideas the unions are peddling. The unions wanted this election. Bill Halter, Lincoln’s Democratic primary opponent, is for card check. Lincoln is not. Card check is the unions’ signature issue.

This election is just weeks after big labor suffered another major loss. In Pennsylvania, big labor wanted Arlen Specter, offering money and institutional support. That didn’t matter to the voters, who elected not to send Specter back to Washington.

However, Blanche Lincoln may have won the Democrat battle, now she faces the general election war against Repeublican John Boozman. Lincoln finds herself trailing badly to the GOP challenger … look for Arkansas to go Republican in November and a pic up for the GOP.

What’s the matter, does the Far LEFT and Unions not have any room in the Democrat party for moderates? They meant this kind of money to oust an incumbent moderate Dem in the primary.
