Quinnipiac Poll: Democratic Primary, Joe Sestak Closes Ground on Arlen Specter, Sestak Trails 47% – 39%

Posted in: 2010 Elections,Politics,Polls,Senate Elections

RUT-ROH … Specter in real fight to win Democrat nomination for Penn US Senate.

The Pennsylvania Democrat primary is coming down to the home stretch and incumbent US Senator Arlen Specter finds himself on the wrong side of the trending poll. The post recent Quinnipiac Poll shows Arlen Specter with a 47% to 39% lead of challenger US House Rep. Joe Sestak. Just one month ago Specter had a 53% to 32% lead over Sestak.

U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak is within striking distance of U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary, trailing the long-time incumbent 47 – 39 percent among likely primary voters, compared to his 53 – 32 percent gap April 7, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today

The narrowing of the Specter/Sestak race is confirmed by other measures as well:

  • Democrats trust Specter more than Sestak to do what he says he will do 42 – 31 percent, compared to 43 – 26 percent April 7;
  • Voters give Specter a 57 – 31 percent favorability, compared to 60 – 26 percent;
  • Sestak gets a 43 – 11percent favorability, compared to 33 – 6 percent.

But Democrats say 60 – 23 percent that Specter is more likely to win in November, little changed from April 7.

With just two weeks to go before the PA Democrat primary, Sestak only trails by 8 points, down from 21 points just a month ago.

Real concern for Specter should be the most April 2010 Rasmussen poll that showed Specter up by only 2% over Sestak. It will be telling to see what Rasmussen’s May polling data indicates in this race as to whether Specter will lose or eek out a narrow victory.

This Democrat primary will be telling as to the anti-incumbent fever in the US with regards to the Democrat party.

Real Clear Politics average polling has Specter up by 7%.
