South Carolina Inmates get Jail Time Cut for Organ Donors.
Posted in: Healthcare
Law makers in South Carolina are considering lessening the time for inmates if they become organ donors. That is a rather interesting premise. There are some hurdles that need to be dealt with. Honestly, its not a bad idea as long as major screening is done on the potential inmate donors.
Federal law makes it illegal to give organ donors “valuable consideration.” Lawmakers want to know whether the term could apply to time off of prison sentences.
“We want to make this work, we really do,” said Republican Sen. John Hawkins. “But I want to make sure no one goes to jail for good intentions.”
Of course one wonders what happens if an inmate wishes to donate his hearts. Also, they best get the forms signed in triplicate … we don’t need any liver donor cards incidents ala Monty Python.
