Police in Canada have foiled a plot by two suspects who were planning on going to a shopping mall and killing as many people as they could before killing themselves on Valentine’s Day.

The suspects were reportedly on a chat stream and were apparently obsessed with killing and death and had many photos of mass killings. Police and other officials said it was not related to Islamic terrorism.

One of the two suspects, a 23-year-old American woman from Geneva, Illinois, was arrested at Halifax’s airport and confessed to the plot. The official said she prewrote a number of pronouncements to be tweeted after her death.

Police said the suspects had access to firearms, but did not elaborate.

The official said the 19-year-old male shot himself to death after police surrounded his parent’s home. The official said after police were tipped off about the plot they surrounded his home. Police saw two people leave the house who they later determined were his parents. The official stopped the parents on a traffic check before calling the man. As the man told police that he did not have any guns and he was on his way out of the house he shot himself, the official said.

      Not related to Islamic terrorism?

      No names released? Why?

Islamic or not … the definition of what these four were planning is “terrorism”.

Justice Minister Peter MacKay: “The attack does not appear to have been culturally motivated, therefore not linked to terrorism.”

Halifax plot: So what is ‘terrorism,’ anyway?
      Febrary 14, 2015

Canada’s definition of terrorism refers to acts or omission committed, in whole or in part, “for a political, religious or ideological purpose, objective or cause.” It does not mention cultural motivations.

Randall Steven Shepherd, Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath charged in Halifax shooting plot
      Feb 14, 2015

Two people were arrested at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after an alleged plot was foiled to kill a large number of people at the Halifax Shopping Centre in the city’s west end on Valentine’s Day. ….

Neither Brennan nor Halifax Regional Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais would characterize the alleged plot as terrorism. They say their investigation shows the plan had nothing to do with ethnic or political motivation.

A 17-year-old male from Cole Harbour, N.S., was originally arrested, but has since been released without charges.

Police say there is no evidence to link the teen to the charges against Souvannarath and Shepherd, but the investigation is ongoing.

Mayor Mike Savage said Halifax police, RCMP, the Geneva Police Department in Illinois, the Canada Border Services Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were all involved in the operation.
